we've dated and slept together. he's much older than me - I'm 25 he's 40 but I really like him and I don't usually fall for a lot of guys.
My question is: do you think the age difference is ok? And are my feelings not real but based on my being here alone for so long?

None of us know you well enough to answer this, but, yes, a part of it could be the isolation drawing you to this guy. (This strongly reminds me of the movie Lost In Translation). Still, that doesn't mean that he's not a great guy.

The age difference by itself isn't that big a deal, but are there other factors at work? Do you have a future? Will one or both of you be going back home eventually? Do you live close to him, or are you willing to move? Are you *really* okay with dating him just while you two are abroad?

We can't know the answers to those questions, but you need to figure them out, and be honest with yourself about what you want and what you're feeling, and do what's best for you. Then, make sure you are honest with HIM.

There is nothing wrong with the age difference but it may be that your feelings are based upon the fact that you have been there alone for so long. fight the isolation by using the internet to keep in touch with friends or others you can talk to - two of my best friends are in Nova Scotia, Canada and Rio in Brazil, along with 4 others in 4 different states. this should keep you from feeling so isolated and then see how the relationship goes - or doesn't go.
