I Think You Are Missing-Out on Some Great Cameras. Why Not Try Using 'AA' Rechargeable Batteries? I Use These And Get Hundreds Of Shots Per Charge And If They 'Die' While I'm Away From Home, I Can Use 'Alkaline' Batteries Till I Can Recharge. P.S. Some Cameras Get Better Battery 'Mileage' Than Others Check Websites For Comparison.

the camera I have is a Cannon Powershot IS3 which is around $350 but then again I wanted something that wasn't just a point and shoot. But since you didn't say what you really are looking for I'll just throw in a few of my thoughts.
Avoid Sony, while they make good products their memory sticks are not compatable with many laptops which from my experience normally use an SD slot which is probibly the standard of the industry
Find a camera you are comfortable with, if you like viewfinders get one with one you can hold and look through, make sure the buttons are convient and make sense to you and so on...
Go for cameras that can use common batteries. It may sound stupid to shell out so much money on bateries alone but who said you had to use disposable? Get some rechargable batteries for your camera and even keep some extra disposables in your camera bag just in case. Nothing is worse then either paying too much for some AA batteries on vacation or not being able to use your camera at all.
Look for the Optical Zoom, don't be fooled by 24x digital zoom or anything like that look for the words optical zoom because digital zoom basicly makes the pixels larger and makes a bad bicture while optical acts like a telescope and gives good quality close ups
Think about accessories, do you think you'll print out pictures for the family? Then consider a camera with an optional Printer Docks these allow for easy access to your pics and select the pictures you want to print without having to turn on your pc.

Go to any store handling electronics (Bestbuy, Walmart, Staples) and try them out. I have two now and each one is good for different things. Panasonic makes many models that take lithium but using rechargeable AAs is almost as good. You should also look for 4 to 5 megapixels and expect to buy a separate drive for it.

most now are comparable with each other. I will advised to look for one with a view finder as the LED displays are hard to see outdoors in the sun. many of the new slim cameras do not have a view finder so you need to use the LED display to view your shot, that is OK if the sun is not too bright or else you can't see the display.

Get a Fujifilm Finepix F10. It uses a lithium-ion battery and has extremely good battery life. Also, it has a tripod mount.
