I want to run sprints for the track team but whenever I sprint as fast as I can I strain my thighs and than can't run for days. How can I sprint without doing that?

I'm a serious high school runner, and just about everyone 'runs' into these problems at some point in their track career. My three best guesses are that you are either:
1. Out of shape
2. Not stretching
3. Have bad form/bad shoes
If you are out of shape, you still have plenty of time before track starts in most areas of the country, so start doing light workouts now and gradually push yourself harder after you have been doing them for awhile. Also try stretching for at least 10 Min's. before AND AFTER you run. I hate stretching because its so boring, but at least I know if I do it correctly, I'll be less likely to feel pain after I run. Also, make sure that you are standing up straight, breathing correctly, and making correct strides as you run. Check your running shoes, too...they may be old and worn out and need replacing or need to be tied tighter. Athletic Insoles bought at stores like Olympia Sports work great for me!

You've already gotten some good advice but tell us what type of training program you are on??? It sounds like all you do is sprint, and that ain't a winning program at all if that's all you do. Also, there could be some lack of knowledge on how to run sprints. What distances are you concentrating on???

Yes you need to stretch the muscles well before you run sprints, but you also need to warm them up too. Some light jogging and some light massage and shake the muscles out too.Making the muscles stronger with some leg extensions and leg curls will help too. Finally you need to be well hydrated.
