Should i or shouldn't i??
sigh...ok..i can't really take hiding from my mom that i'm learning Persian. i can't decide if i want to tell her or not. i live in the US, and Persian is from Iran...we aren't on such a good level with Iran and my mom got very upset when she found out i was talking with someone from Iran...becuz they're the "enemy" and may be using me for a terrorist thing! i explained everything to her...and she still hates it. and i decided i wanted to learn persian...and seeing as she already does not like me being associated with a person from iran...i don't know how she'd react to me learning their language...she's usually understanding of stuff i want to do or have done...i don't know if i'd be crossing a line or...?i really don't want her to prevent me from using the computer to talk with my friends from there either...i'm so worried and if i had her cooperation i might be able to learn persian better...becuz then i wouldn't have to hide stuff and i could buy

Hey, it's great that you're learning Persian. When I was in high school I used to try to learn languages often. I studied some intently. Tell your mom that your reason for learning Persian has nothing to do with "terrorists" or with "the enemy". Don't bother trying to stick up for Iran, because she won't listen to you. We all know the real reason for the war, but she is acting ignorant so don't bother. There are other countries that speak Persian, so try to relate your learning to one of those countries instead, for the time being, until she feels comfortable with what you're doing. If she still acts ignorant, explain to her that you're doing a GOOD thing by trying to educate yourself. My mom used to be all weird with things like that, and I'd be like ... mom... I LIKE TO LEARN DAMNIT!!!

I am a Persian,living in Iran.
I think you should tell her, because if she find that you are hiding something from her,it makes her worry about you.
but I have a suggestion: If it is possible ask here to chat to your Iranian friends, show here pictures of them, etc.. . maybe if she talks to some Iranians or see their pics, she understands that they are not terrorists, they are only normal people (I didn't say they all are nice people!) like other nationalities. don't let that political affairs (refers to Bush or Ahmadabad) affect on your opinion about the people from other nationality. most of the Iranians don't have any bad sense about Americans.
my second suggestion is that choose one or two Persian novel like the one that has been written by an Iranian woman living in US, "at-re sonbol, at-re kaj", (it is an English novel and then a translator has translated it to Persian) and offer your mom the English version, she may become familiar to Iranians and don't think they all are terrorist anymore.
I can suggest you more novels if you like.
About the dictionary I suggest Narcis, this is a useful English-Persian and Persian-English dictionary.

Your mom's being a stereotypical witch.
Not even stereotypical, she's made it up in her mind that Iran is full of terrorists who want to kill you all.
Um. No.
I'd say ignore her once and for all but she IS your mom. Have you tried explaining to her that she's being prejudiced? And brainwashed by the media that Iran is the US' enemy?
She's being ridiculous...

She should be proud of you for wanting to learn such an..uncommon language, to say the least :D

I'd tell my mom (if i wasn't Persian and i was learning something else) that she should be appreciative cos some dumbshits at school barely even know how to write an essay in English, let alone the Farsi alphabet.

No don't hide it from your mother ... And go ahead and learn a new language.... But be careful while on the Internet ... don't give out any info on yourself of where you are that can be dangerous.... If anything you can become a translator later in life....Most Iranian people are very nice....Just because our governments are enemy's dose not mean the people have to be....

first of all....Good for u for learning another language!!! i don't se anything wrong with it...not everyone from iran is a terrorist. it sounds to me like u want to tell ur mother but are just nervous about what her reaction will be. i would sit down and tell her flat out. I know she will probably think that ur doing this to rebel against her reaction with u and that guy but tell her thats not the case....just tell her the truth but speak to her in a calm, rational manner....yeah she might be pissed at first but this is something that u decided to do and she should respect that.

Here's the solution: STOP talking with these people! STOP trying to learn their language. There are many languages you can learn other than the enemies language! Listen to your mother this time, please! You don't realize the harm that could be done and you evidently don't understand the severity of what they have done to the U.S.A. because you said "we aren't on such a good level with Iran." that's a huge understatement! You are being manipulated by the evil enemy. PLEASE, PLEASE stop communicating with them. We are not smart enough (and I'm 66) to know just what they can do to us through the Internet. Be a good girl - a good American citizen, please! Find other friends - they are not your friend!

Explain to her calmly and carefully that you will be cautious about whom you speak to, but this is something that you want to do. You are interested in learning the language and that's it. She should bend a little and understand.

well, I don´t live in u.s.a. but I have known about preventions about wars in midwest but I think sometimes people exagerate about this stuffs.
not all midwestern people are terrorists.
I have a friend and her name is libia and her name is rejected by all sistems in U.S.A this is not fair to my friend and government askes her to chage her name I think this is enough of fears and preventions.
I live in colombia and everyworld thinks that all colombian people are narcos.
I think government is taking an raising that fears to the common people .
you must to tell to your mother because she cares about you be ok.
also, you can learn good thing about midwestersn people as their customes and meals and it is not bad.
I have arab and irak friend that don´t have nothing to do with wars.
they are just victims like us.
P.D.
excuse my english.

If she is that racist to the extent that she could shoot any Iran guy that she sees with a gun, then don't tell her.
