Catholics believe that we are judeged immediately upon our death- and we go to Heaven or to Hell.
For those destined for heaven, a very few go straight to Heaven, most end up in a state of purification we call purgatory ( the 'refiner's fire').
There is also a judgement that will happen at the coming of Christ. Then everyone will know everyone else's sins and destinies. This will show the mercy and judgement of God.

We are all judged by Jesus Himself upon our earthly death. But, at the end of time, there is the General Judgement, in which EVERYONE is judged. You see, even after you've passed on from this world, your presence here will have an effect on the future that can last, well, indefinitely.
Our initial judgement upon our earthly death does not include any "future" events that we impact despite having passed away.
It is in this general judgement when ALL people are given a general judgement - that does include such things as the impact we may or may not have had on earthly events even after we've passed on.
You see, someone you inspire now, who would have otherwise gone to hell, will then pass on what you have taught him, from one generation to the next and so one. In bringing just one person to Christ now, you may have saved MANY down through the ages as time moves onto fulfillment. Understand what I am saying? it is at the fullness of time, when all earthly events are cominig to conclusion, that the true measure of our being is judged.
Blows the mind, doesn't it? The idea that bringing one person to Christ now might result in this person's family coming to Christ, and their children, and their children, and so forth - all having been saved through you when most of them have forgotten how Faith came into their lives. Amazing, isn't it?
That is what this future judgement is all about.

"Unless you eat of my body and drink of my blood you have no life within you". At this point many left him...Jesus is alive and so the Catholic who is in the state of Sanctifying grace , upon death, will go to be with Jesus in Heaven. St. Paul tells us---"Behold I tell you a great mystery, not all of us standing here will fall asleep (a euphamism for death), some of us will be changed in the twinkling of an eye.---That is the Catholic. Baptizm is the key---that is the betrothal ceremony and the betrothal is binding--- some of the other religions who do not celebrate the Holy Eucharist with the Catholic Mass, may still go to Heaven for the wedding banquet but not untill the last day when everyone will be judged but, the Catholic who truly eats his body and drinks his blood NOW at the wedding banquet will never die---we are there !!

The popular teaching is that when Christians die they immediately go to heaven, where they take up residence in their permanent abode.
But there IS NO such teaching of this in the Bible.
Notice John 3:13: "NO ONE has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven, that is, the Son of Man [Jesus Christ] who is in heaven."........What is it about this passage of scripture does anyone not understand?
This scripture makes two significant points. First, these are Jesus Christ's own words. If anyone had gone to heaven, Jesus would know about it. Second, John recorded these words many years after Jesus died and ascended to heaven-still affirming that NO ONE other than Jesus had gone to heaven.......http://www.ucg.org/booklets/AD/beingsinheaven.htm

immediately after death, there comes your 'personal judgement', when you go to Heaven, Hell, or Purgatory (which is a temporary purifying stop on the way to Heaven for those of us not completely perfect at the time of our death).
then, at the end of the world, comes the 'general judgement', when our souls are reunited with our glorified bodies and everybody finds out exactly what everybody else did. it's 'proclaimed from the rooftops', so to speak. (also, everyone still in Purgatory goes to Heaven and Purgatory goes pfffftt.)
hope this clears up some of your confusion. have a great day and God bless.

The Bible says that we will all stay in the ground, until Jesus returns. Then he will tell us where we are going. That even some church leaders will be sent to hell because they taught wrong. And Jesus will say "I don't know you.".
Be careful with your life.

After death, you are going to be in a non-existence stage until you are either resurrected or forever forgotten by God. The resurrection will take place after the war of Armageddon.

I believe that when you die you will, at first, experience what you expect to experience. Then you will move on when you choose to.
I believe that the only judgment we receive is the judgment we put upon ourselves. I don't think God would give us free will and then punish us for using it.
This is what I feel is true but you should keep asking this question until you hear an answer that fills you heart with joy. God is love and his word would feel like nothing less in your heart.

For the believer, to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.
For the catholic, eternal hell due to their false gospel of works. Catholics will be in eternal hell if they don't leave the catholic cult that teaches a false gospel.
