I feel lost as to how to re-enter the working world which I inhabited from age 15 'til I had kids in my 30s. I have a BS in Zoology & an MS in Counseling (but not licensable as a counselor, don't have the requirements) and served in the military (not in a transferable field, of course! Had to stay out of the workforce much longer than planned due to child w/ a disability but really want to return. But to what? I've been looking and it seems like all the professional jobs I see require qualifications I don't have or degrees I don't hold. Due to certain physical limitations I now have, I can't do jobs involving lifting or prolonged standing (like all day) and that further reduces my options. I'd sure appreciate some suggestions particularly if there's anyone out there who's been a SAHM and been able to re-enter the professional world; please no b.s. jokester-type responses because I don't need to be kicked when I'm down. Thanks!

A BS and an MS are nothing to sneeze at, but It sounds like your marketable skills need some dusting off.

You don't say what you want to do. Does Zoology still interest you or are you thinking more about counseling? I will bet you learned a lot about dealing with a disabled child. Have you thought about counseling parents who unexpectedly land in that situation--like you did? Of course you may want to move away from that...

I suggest you will need to pick some field, and find out what marketable skills you need to acquire through seminars, refreshers, job training, etc. You have some excellent degrees. You just need to dust them off and bolster them.

What would it take to get licensed as a counselor - are you close, and just maybe need an additional course or two? That might be worth it.

Jobs in the zoology field are probably pretty hard to find, especially if you've been out of school for quite awhile. Counselling jobs might be more available.

Good luck.
