The Mass is supposed to be about JESUS, not us. If people are actually bored in Mass or they think it takes too much time, they don't get it. Being in the Real Presence of Jesus is an amazing and wonderful thing. A person who truly loves the Lord can't get enough of it.
It doesn't matter if you don't interact with the priest.
It doesn't matter if you don't dig the format.
It doesn't matter if the music isn't to your tastes.
It doesn't matter if you don't like the people sitting around you.
It doesn't matter if you have things to do outside of church.
It doesn't matter how lazy you are.
What matters is that we get to go and stand in the Lord's presence, we get to interact with HIM, and we get to sing about and learn about HIM.

Well I am catholic, and with CJ's twisted misinformed opinion aside (cannibalism!!! Really! Puuuulease!)...
I would like to see the catholic church become more "happy", they always seem to be so solemn and depressing, which is why I generally don't go. One should feel better when one leaves church, I always seem to feel more depressed! I have been to a number of services at other churches/religions and I can say it certainly was a more uplifting experience!
I don't think they need to change the Mass it's self so much as they do the things leading up to it and after it. Get people more into it rather then just standing/kneeling there while the priest drones on about how I am going to burn in hell!
Religion should be a happy thing, not solemn, depressing or fearful.

The Mass is fine the way it is. It's some laity's understanding of the Mass that leaves a lot to be desired in some people.
Anyone with any semblance of true devotion towards the Lord WILL take an hour's worth of their time to go and worship the Lord. Finding one hour once per week in which to attend Mass is not difficult do to AT all.
What you call "laziness" I call "spiritual sloth", sloth being one of the seven deadly sins - and now we know why. Sloth makes us think we don't have enough time to go to Mass. I know exactly what you mean when you speak of those who are present in body but not in mind. I call them "coma Catholics". I know, I was one for some fifteen years!
Holy Mass, properly understood, is not something Catholics should see as a burden to attend. Proper understanding of the Mass, and the various rituals within, will make a Catholic want to go to Mass. It is something to be looked forward to, not attended grudgingly.

Your question has shown very clearly that the problem is NOT with the Mass, but with the people.
The mass does not need to change. People need to change.
It is very, very sad that people are either too lazy, too busy, or too distracted to be with their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
geesewereabove is sadly mistaken about the catholic Bible. Following is what is in the Catholic Bible at the beginning of Exodus 20:
Then God delivered all these commandments:
"I, the LORD, am your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that place of slavery.
You shall not have other gods besides me.
You shall not carve idols for yourselves in the shape of anything in the sky above or on the earth below or in the waters beneath the earth; you shall not bow down before them or worship them. For I, the LORD, your God, am a jealous God, inflicting punishment for their fathers' wickedness on the children of those who hate me, down to the third and fourth generation; but bestowing mercy down to the thousandth generation, on the children of those who love me and keep my commandments.

Changes in the mass won't help, even though changes are absolutely needed! The fast paced world is just a cop out excuse. I work two jobs and still make it to church three times a week. Laziness is also just an excuse! People have the energy to do the things they want to do!
Now as for those changes. It's easy. First, take everything out of the mass that isn't scripturally based. (i.e. praying to Mary) Second, add those things that are scripturally based, such as saved by faith and not by works!

Church use to be all day long, at least in the non-Catholic churches. The Catholic bible has lots of lines removed so you won't know the whole truth. Like the Second Commandment that requires us to pray ONLY to GOD. It says if ones prays to anyone in the sky or heaven, on earth, or in the water; they are sinning real bad.
Then it split the 10th Commandment into two, so they could say they have ten.
There are 306 Commandments that Moses wrote down. My Catholic neighbors said they are not in their Catholic Bible.

1) Stop the silly "and also with you" response to "The Lord be with you" - "et *** spiritu tuo" does NOT mean "and also with you".
2) Encourage kneeling throughout the Canon of the Mass. This is a HOLY time...Christ is Present!
3) Do away with that horrible "kiss of peace" halftime show where everybody walks around hugging!! PLEASE!
4) Encourage Communion Rails and kneeling to receive the Blessed Sacrament.
5) Bring the mystery back. Bring back good chant. If I want guitar music, I'll go to the pub

Catholics are not saved Christians. It would benefit those who call themselves "catholics", to leave the catholic cult and be saved. Catholicism teaches a false gospel of works that leads to eternal hell, not to mention the mass of death and the weekly cannibalism done in it.
