If your looking for color, and depending on your region of the country, I suggest crotons. They have very colorful leaves in hues of reds, oranges and purples. Also caladiums. their leaves come in a myriad of color as well, but they are bulbs, so they are only visible in spring and summer and die back in the fall/winter months.

Anything green-ferns especially. Just go to a garden store and find them. They can help you pick them out.
