Yes he can get a senior railcard (for anyone over 60). Costs £20 but will save 1/3 on all journeys so its well worth the expense

Anyone over the age of 60 can purchase a Senior Citizen Railcard for £20 per year. No photo required, just proof of address and proof of age. This covers all UK mainline rail travel and will give a anverage of 34% off most rail travel (some exceptions on advance purchase) and is valid on off peak travel only.
Some councils will give further concessions for the fully retired person.

You can get what is called a Senior railcard and costs just £20 per year and entitles you to 34% off all ticket prices in both standard and First class travel, and you dont need an photo card to accompany it but you must carry it with you and produce it when requested to do so.

You can pick up a leaflet at any mainline train station

you buy it every year, it costs £20 and yes it can be used on virgin and all other trains

You can apply for the Senior Persons RailCard Online or goto your local rail station and get the appliction form.
It does save you 1/3 (third) on all rail journeys on National Rail. This will not save you money on journeys using other rail services like London's Docklands Light Railway and London Underground.

It is an annual ticket, and yes, it covers Virgin Trains - it covers all railway services in the UK, other than London Underground etc.
