Is there a maximum amount the IRS will direct deposit for a tax refund before they just send out a check instead?

There's no limit. Whatever you are entitled to can be direct deposited, even if it runs to 6 figures or more.

I think whatever the tax refund is, that amount can be directly deposited into the taxpayer's account if the routing number and bank account number were supplied when the tax papers were filed.
