The problem with blanket generalizations like these is that they mean nothing. What is "Rightwing", what is "Leftwing"? I know the actual definitions of these terms.
For example NAZI stood for (translated) the National Socialist German Workers Party, a Leftest Socialist organization. After discovering how evil hitler and NAZIs were "leftests" now call them "rightwing".
The Question: "how can somebody be a Democrat and a Christian?" makes much more sense. After all Democrats are a political party of which one can become a member.
After all, Democrats:
Supported Slavery
Opposed Civil Rights
Vetoed the First Civil Rights Legislation in the 1860's
Had many candidates for office selected at KKK meetings
Maintained a segregationist society
Passed and protected Jim Crow voting laws
Formed the House Un-American Activities Committee, "The Commie Hunters" with KKK membership optional! (HUAC)
Imprisoned Japanese Americans for ethnicity
Imposed Martial Law and rationing on the United States
Dropped nuclear weapons
Attacked North Korea and withdrew
Attacked North Vietnam
Escalated the Vietnam War during Johnson's administration.
Screwed up the economy during Carters Administration
Stripped the US defenses bear to balance the budget. (Democrats who refused to buy armor for the Military now blame President Bush because there was not enough armor.)
These are all historical FACTs, not political rhetoric and can easily be proved by reviewing the Congressional record.
Now, if you can present any ONE thing that the Republican Party did as a Party that is as "criminal" as:
The Political Support of Slavery
Forming the HUAC and the Commie Blacklist
Dropping Nuclear Weapons
Opposing and Vetoing Civil Rights Acts
I might admit you have a point. Until then you need to politically educate yourself about the United States and the rest of the world.

It is true to say that the kind of extreme right wing politics of George W Bush does not sit well with the teaching of Jesus eg the sermon on the mount. Love your enemy is one of the commands he would do well to follow. Also if you look at the life of the early disciples who sold their possessions and shared what they had so that noone went hungry, that does not sit well with Bush's appalling treatment of the poorer people in the US.
Having said that, Christians can be sincere and active members of any mainstream political parties and there is nothing wrong with that

Your own morals can make you a conservative Christian and and right wing politically. The conflict is when a the right wing Christian is completely against using money in social programs. Christ would want the social programs to help people in need.

Because you can also claim you're the dinosaur Emperor of China and made of cream cheese, ruling over a flat world in a universe that is shaped like a butterfly.
The fact something is claimed alone does not make it true.

How can a person be left-wing OR right-wing and still claim to be a Christian? Neither side follows the teachings of Christ perfectly. That's why Christians are supposed to be apolitical.

You can't.
Nor politically left-wing.
In fact, a serious christian won't get involved in politics, at all.
John 15:19 records Jesus as saying to his followers:
" you are no part of the world."

Because there politics are right-wing, yet they practice the christian faith semantically and contractually.
