As cliched as it sounds, what makes Manila great is the people that live here. There are tons and tons of neighborhoods, each with its own feel. However, at this point, serious steps need to be taken to maintain the historical features of the city. Everyday more and more old, classic dilapidated wooden homes are torn down for faceless townhouses. In some ways, the greatest thing Manila has going for it is its potential. We need to: 1. Preserve the remaining classic structures & architecture (old homes, Army Navy Club, etc) 2. Preserve our environmental resources--especially Manila Bay 3. Create more pedestrian friendly areas. Part of the reason traffic is so bad is because the city is (for the most part) not very easy to navigate on foot. Air pollution & vendors notwithstanding, many of the sidewalks are non existent or in bad shape. I think that an increase in tourism (and the money that tourism brings) is going to be the answer to many of the economic issues in the Philippines (not just Manila). Once we start to bring the shine back to the city, visitors will come as well. More visitors = more jobs, more jobs = less people forced to find work overseas. I think that the city is on the up and up. There are many improvements and hopefully these will continue.

You are taking advantage of all the cheap booze on offer in the Philippines,,I cannot think of any AA meetings there but I'm sure the local priest will give you a sermon or two!
Try not to drink too much,,when I lived in Manila I ended up with a liver problem,,stick to San Migs

I do not know the answer to this question but I just wanted to write to you and offer my congratulations for wanting to make the first step and I wish you all the luck in the world. Keep at it when the going gets tough, which it will, but you will be well supported whichever group you find available to you locally.
