Throwing "shuriken" is just like throwing a frisbie. You'll get the hang of it.

Again, the much quoted 'Ninjas' began learning how to throw stars and darts at a very early age, like by 6 years old. So by the time they were of prime age, like 16-18, they could bullseye a target every time with a shuriken or any thrown dart-like object.
Shurikens and darts were usually thrown under handed or side handed. They would 'cup' them in the palm of their hand to throw.
Very large Shuriken were thrown over handed like you would throw a circular saw blade.
In today's 2007 Korean Army they practice throwing shuriken every day, except imagine rail-road spikes welded together to form a really big throwing star and throw them at logs 'n railroad ties.
It takes constant practice to be good.

I warn here.. never practice this alone without any guidance or with a dartboard.
Ninja stars can be learn in ninjitsu or ninjado lessons at an advanced stage.
If you are still at elementary stage, I would suggest u practice with poker cards 1st.
Else u will end up injuring yourself instead.

There are many different ways, the inside is similar to a inside ridge hand strike. The outside throw is similar to an out side shuto strike, the straight throw is similar to a downwards shuto strike. The upwards throw is similar to an upwards ridge hand strike.
Remember all weapons are just an extension of your hands, and therefor all your strikes can be done with any weapon.
You must remember to put focus behind all your throws just like you put focus behind all your strikes (the focus amplifies the power) I know you know that but I put that here for people not in the martial arts that might want to know.

There are several books on shurikens and that aspect that are very informative and I would suggest you do some reading up on them. You will find that the design of them, (ia. how many points, how the points are shaped, hole or no hole) determines how they should be thrown, (ia. underhand, overhand, overhand with back spin) in order to do the most damage when used. You will also find that they are illegal in most states in the United States and also in many foreign countries.
