Show respect to God, foremost, probably. Also probably as a community habit to show their wealth and success, stemming from years of years of tradition.

Not all wear coats and ties, and dresses. However, I would like to consider it as an agreed upon attire that makes us all alike. It is hard to talk about how outlandish some outfit is, if we are in coats and ties. Our church has been around for a hundred and fifty years, and the older churches like our dress that way more than some of the new churches that have recently sprung up.

If you call it formal wear, you apparently have not been to a formal event. There are no tuxedos or bow ties, or evening gowns for the ladies either. I think we consider it to be the same thing we wear to work. OH, and some ladies wear pants to church.

In other churches, no one wears a coat and tie, not even the pastor.

As to dressing when you go and meet God, I consider that a fallacy, we are in the presence of God 24-7. We go to church to fellowship with like minded people and to hear the word of God preached. Yes the Holy Spirit is there, but He is with me all the time. God has seen me in the shower, on the pot, and in many other places where I am not dressed up.

Well traditionally as church was on a Sunday people dressed in their Sunday best clothes... Probably goes back to when most people only had work clothes and one Sunday suit or dress. They would not feel comfortable in going to church in their work clothes. These days most people have much more extensive wardrobes, and possibly smart casual dress is taking over from the very formal attire.

I don't necessarily dress formal, however, I do pick out something from my closet that is nice, comfortable and modest! I go to church to worship Jesus Christ. These days, I wonder what some other people are going for because of the way they are dressed. Why so revealing? What are they trying to reveal? Of course, just another sign of the end times!

To look ur best in the presence of God!! Churches don't put pressure on u to do this, there are cases where women with the most suggestive clothing and disheartening profession so to put it have come in but they are looking for God and this is a place where no must pass judgement! Go in what makes u feel comfortable with obviously a line that u know is acceptable!! As ur friendship with God deepens ur somehow willing to look ur best!! xxxx

R-e-s-p-e-c-t.

Also, many Christians go to church once per week so they get dressed up to help define the time in church as different from their workweek. Many pray alone during the week without getting dressed up.

Another answer is tradition.

Some Muslims pray several times per day and it would be impractical to change clothes for each prayer time.

Today there is less emphasis on what you wear to the church, mosque or synagogue -- it is more important you show up.

Most Christians wear formal clothes to clothes to show respect to their fellow Christians. It also speaks of the importance of worship. Why do people dress up for weddings? because it's an important occasion and deserves nice clothes.

It depends on the church. I wore jeans to church this morning, myself--with trainers and a denim jacket.

Some people dress up to go to church because they consider it a sign of "respect" to God, just as the Biblical priests had special clothes they wore. Others are more secure in their relationship with God and realise that if He sees, accepts and saves us and hears our prayers when we're in our jeans (or indeed, when we're naked in the shower), that it doesn't matter what we wear to church as long as we're clean and decently covered.

Some congregations actually have a "dress code" requiring suits for men and skirts for women. I wouldn't attend a church that told me what I can and can't wear.

I thought about this yesterday in fact. But its fulfilling a role. Think about it. If you go to a Yankees game, do you know wear a baseball cap or shirt? If you go to a Rammstein concert, do you not wear a Rammstein shirt? If you go to visit your aging grandmother you do not wear an obscene shirt, do you? We constantly chose our clothing depending on our environment, and at church we want to look respectable, clean, and diligent. The irony is not that we wear fancy clothes for church, but instead the irony is that we wear nice clothes for church, and then go home and change into obscene clothing and succumb to the world's temptations afterward.

Which churches have you been to?

Who does not want to dress smartly for such an important occassion as meeting God, but God does not look at our clothes, clothes only came into being when Adam and Eve had fallen and hid from the Lord because they discovered their nakedness!
