It is completely wrong, as you say, to rule your life through a book, as with other books, like the Justice Code, they might restrict us from using logic reasoning and from exercising compassion. (For example the Justice Code would by force, put some families on the street, ignoring mercy and compassion)
In the same way, if we interpret the Bible or the Quran without mercy and compassion, we are condemning others who perhaps in eyes of the truth exercise more justice as those who render the verdict.
From another perspective, given God's free will to man, it is necessary to conclude that while men have and could change things about God's given testimony, it is nevertheless the power of a true mighty God to achieve the final outcome even by using whatever change might have been added to his words.
And that in the end would come to prove to be the will of God.
That is the complexity of our world as it is.
Some fall deep, to serve as a cause of judgement for another and they will get their reward in an after life.
Some will go high to serve as an example that a busy businessman's life is not of as much enjoyment as the life of a humble country man.
So is everybody judged, we are nonetheless responsible for accepting other men's doctrines and dogmas, as well as for better understanding what would God's justice be.
We must finally understand what is religion, and What "religions" are. What are politics; and What "Spiritual Warfare" in political sense is.

Interesting Question. Here's what I know.
I myself am an Jehovah's Witness (Christian)
I took no offense to your question, you said it was the only two you're familiar with and you have a question that many people ask... So all the others who put you down, just ignore them, you're not the only one who asks this question.
We have the most pure bible out there, next to the King James (which still doesn't have God's name in it where it all should be).
Most bible's have been changed by man to sound like something they would like it to sound like. But really, a book that is so old is important, because it's values and morals and principals are still good practice now-a-days.
For Example,
No sex before marriage: Keeps us safe from all the sicknesses out there, keeps us with a good clean conscience in front of God, and keeps us from having unwanted pregnancies.
No Cursing or Slandering: Keeps us close to our brothers and sisters (and I mean like a real family) and keeps us clean in front of God.
No Smoking: Keeps our conscience good in the eyes of God because he told us to treat our body's as temples (is destroying it right?), also keeps us healthy and happy, not regretting what we're doing.
No lieing: God put this in with murder and adultry, it keeps us honest to all man, it helps us keep a good conscience, it really works because we are known to be honest ppl and there are a lot of ppl where if they find out we're Witnesses, they hire us on the spot because they know we can by trusted.
Those are just a few examples... and there is so many more. Many ppl wonder what good is the bible because of how old it is... if God spoke to you about how to live but it was thousands of years ago, would you just reject what he said because of it's age if it still has many good pieces of advice?
I don't think I would.

I care that the wisdom from the past is preserved. Tradition usually is counter-productive, but there often exist a few shreds of hidden meaning that we forget as time goes on, and we need to remind ourselves of.
There's purpose in preserving such things, but there is no purpose in blowing yourself up. However, if you do blow yourself up, you cannot be a repeat offender, as you will die. So, I guess it hardly matters. Sure others will die, people will be sad, but it'll probably serve to turn other people off to such behavior more than inspire a recurring incident. People have learned a great deal from the past. In hindsight, these suicide bombings may teach us a lot.

Should have phrased your question better if you meant no disrespect. Anyway, if you don't understand a religion or religion, you do your research, ask a respected follower some questions to gain knowledge rather than listen to critics of the religion, because critics will never open their minds to what they don't believe. After all that, decide for yourself. BTW: At the heart of Christianity is God and God is Love.

May i put my 2c in....? ahem, as I draw out my soapbox!
Christianity is a FEAR based religion used to control the masses!!
Because fear is the most productive tool these mind control cults have to win over and keep followers.
Source(s):
Remember, "god" is nothing more than a nonsense word created by man to explain away all of the things we can't yet understand.
Religion is a disease of the mind, born of fear, which has done nothing but bring untold misery down upon the human race.
If you can't get someone to convert willingly through preaching, fear is the next best tool.
Christianity for instance is based on two principles:
1. If you believe, you will be rewarded with the prospect of an eternity in Heaven when you die.
2. If you don't believe, you will be rewarded with the prospect of an eternity in Hell when you die.
For Christians:
God is all-loving, all-wise and all-merciful, so long as you submit to becoming a slave - salivating and singing heaps of praises on him for all eternity.
Much like an Earthly dictator who rules his subjects under rule of tyranny - submit or suffer.
Two methods in which religion spreads
1)Violence
2)Child Indoctrination

i care.
just repeat the Lords Prayer, what does it mean?
YOUR KINGDOM COME, your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.
it must mean what it says.
and for a guide on what's acceptable & unacceptable is plain. 1 corinthians 6: 9, Do you not know that the unjust will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators nor idolaters nor adulterers nor boy prostitutes nor sodomites. 10, nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor robbers, will inherit the kingdom of God.
& i read this, this morning.
it's sent some hard-line muslims into a spin.
where as others are pleased a muslim is in space!
MALAYSIA; Muslims get space guide
The government has come up with the world's first comprehensive guidebook for Muslims in space as its first astronaut prepares to go into orbit next week. The book, entitled Guidelines for Performing Islamic Rites at the International Space Station, teaches the Muslim astronaut how to perform ablutions, determine the location of Mecca when praying, prayer times, and how to fast in space, the Star newspaper reported yesterday. The 18-page guidebook will be translated into English, Russian, Arabic and possibly other languages. Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor, an orthopedic surgeon and university lecturer from Kuala Lumpur, will leave Earth from Kazakhstan's Baikonur launchpad for Russia's International Space Station on Wednesday.

sad but true.

Believe me I'd LOVE to have nobody care about my faith.
Problem is that I'vebeen regularly attacked by uninformed Zealots who firmly believe that they KNOW what my faith is about & it pretty well degenerates from there. There is NO WAY to inform a bigot that their facts are simply wrong.
It's not as if I have my faith written a neon sign on my head or anything - if anything I prefer o take a low key. But you can't stop Fundy Wackjobs.

Well, have you ever tried to ask a psychologist studying religion? I did, and he just... gave me the answer. "Everyone suffers from a fear of death, whether they'll admit it or not. It's part of the human condition. They build up a coping mechanism that allows them to deal with it. That coping mechanism becomes unconscious, otherwise it'd interfere with their life. Although we are unaware of the workings of our unconscious, our unconscious effects everything we do. The urge to jump out of the way of an oncoming train is actually just part of whats called your "Death Drive". However, prolonging your life only works to a certain extent and then people need "immortaility" in some form. The four forms of immortality are: Family lineage, Great Work(s), Wealth and Religion (Which offers a way out of death (Heaven/Reincarnation). People will seek these forms of immortality in order to avoid "Existential Terror". In other words, without these forms, people suffer anxiety and may even succumb to suicide in order to resolve that terror."

The word of God and the law of God in the bible is permanent. The lenght of time it was written is not the point but on its permanency. Nobody could alter or change the words in the bible and nobody could delete any word written therein because it is prohibited by God as it is written in Revelation. Read it.
Rev 22:18 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:
Rev 22:19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.
Rev 22:20 He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.
Rev 22:21 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.

Whatever your religion or belief. You need to feel it in your heart. You do not have to go to church, to believe in God. You are closer to God in a garden, then any where else. A lot of churches are there for your money, but don't really care about you.
