I would like to know how come they get so revered when the only "cures" are being controlled with drugs which knock you out so you cant feel anything, and the enlightened ones admit that they just dont know. Would we be better with witch doctors?

I think psychiatry is the last bastion of medicine to be opened up a bit... psychiatrists and psychologists have a lack of transparency about their treatments, and a very scary amount of power over the individual under their care. They are answerable to no-one, and it's very difficult to deal with them on behalf of someone else...
I have found two cases of this lately, and have heard GP's and others complain about this also.
When a person is referred to any other discipline, there is usually a feedback or reporting mechanism, to ensure the continuity of care is maintained, and to ensure the patient has either benefitted or not from the referral...
This doesn't happen in psychiatry/psychology. Once the person is referred, they are lost to the system.
I have to admit, it's not a profession I thought much about, but the more I learn about it, the more reservations I have.

I'm on a psychiatric drug, Paxil. I wouldn't say it "knocks me out" or "I can't feel anything." That comment isn't true for most people. It can be true if someone is taking stronger drugs. I used to take Seroquel and it was too strong for me so I asked my doctor to put me back on Paxil.

I have chronic depression and anxiety and the medication works for me.

"The enlightened ones admit that they just don't know"--I'm not sure what you mean by that statement. Most psychiatrists I know will admit that it's a lot of guess work--they can only go by what the patient tells them, what they observe, and what treatment seems to work.

There are good psychiatrists and bad psychiatrists; just like any other profession.

I dont think psychiatrists are all bad, but like in any profession there are bad people out there.
When i was ill i was refered to a community mental health team and sorted with them prior to getting to a psychiatrist.
But i have worked in mental health now for 6 years and have met some extremely intelligent and caring psychiatrists who really want to help people.
Psychiatrists and therapists are the most trained in this field and there are still so many unanswered questions but people with mental illnesses were a lot worse off 20 years ago and worse still 20 years before that.
It is still a developing science.

I think it's worth a try as a last attempt when everything else hasn't work. No herbal meds er witch doctors don't have any science to back it up. Things like st. john's wort are just placebos. Besides, sometimes natural cures are much more dangerous than the prescribed drugs especially when people think there are no side effects.

My god what an attitude. Psychiatrists are trained initially the same as any other doctor and then specialise - it is perfectly possible to have a mental illness treated by a psychiatrist and live a normal well functioning non sedated life! I have had bipolar for 13 years and I am at university in my third year of human biology and no one can tell any different between myself or any other students! Where do people like you come from?!?

Witch doctors wouldn't be able to do anything about my Panic Disorder or PTSD. On the other hand, the four-drug cocktail my shrink has me on has me almost totally in remission. And I'm not knocked out, except when I take Xanax at night, when it's OK to be knocked out. So modern psychiatry, and my shrink in particular, get a "thumbs-up" from me.

There are good ones and less so. Some are just wizards with the meds. A few still specialize in talk therapy. So it's dangerous to generalize. I am ignoring your barb about witch doctors, some of whom are my close friends.

I was advised at one time NOT to see a psychiatrist unless I really felt there was no other option, as they were all about medication, and nothing else. This came from the Community Psychiatric Nurse, so....

The basic concept in the mind of the patient is to tell his problems mostly financial in cases of men and related to marriage or love in case of women. But on the other end the thing which is running in the mind of the psychiatrist is to relieve the stress of the patient by giving them chance to let it out and make them as comfortable as possible. If they think that even after telling the whole story the patient is not relieved, only then they prescribe drugs. Otherwise mostly they suggest lifestyle changes and guidelines based on experiences. People go to psychiaterists because they want someone to listen to their social and financial problems. Witch doctors are useless because they ll always find faults within you to make money from you and they will make you do odd things. They are shallow and selfish people. Stay away from them as much as possible.
