Ruger without a doubt. Ruger has superior crane lockup and a nicer barrel. Look at how cheaply Taurus makes the cylinder latch and star ejector. You have to look at the workmanship. You can also get a Wilson Combat tune kit to replace that Ruger mainspring if you find that the Ruger has too heavy of a trigger pull. I would have to agree with the poster who would take the 686 over the Ruger or Taurus. The only problem is that S&W revolvers are very high right now.

I own a Ruger SP-101, a Taurus Model 96 and a Taurus PT-111. The .38 Special SP-101 was purchased new and worked great right out of the box. I have 100% confidence in it. It is part of my self-defense handgun collection. The Model 96 was purchased used and has had issues. Sticky extraction of fired cases has annoyed me even after sending it back to Taurus for warranty repair. It also has issues (fails-to-fire on the first trigger pull) with some types of ammunition (i.e. Remington Thunderbolts). While I've found ammunition that fires and extracts properly (Federal), this is will not be a self-defense or hunting pistol for me. It is only expected to allow me to use .22LR cartridges for economical target practice. I expect to sell it or trade it in towards a higher quality double-action revolver in the future. The 9mm PT-111 was purchased new and has also worked great out of the box. No issues, no malfunctions and I have 100% confidence in it. It is part of my self-defense handgun collection. So, in your situation, I would purchase a Ruger GP-100 instead of the Taurus 608. The cost difference is about the price of two boxes of ammunition. But the peace of mind I would enjoy during the rest of my lifetime would be priceless.

The Ruger GP 100 is superior to the Taurus 608.

Ruger, definitely. Solid as a rock, and twice as reliable. Will handle a steady diet of the hottest .357 loads you can find. It's built with extra steel in the topstrap and forcing cone area, and has an extra locking feature for the cylinder. It's beefier (heavier) than the Taurus, but it will last forever.

I'd go for either one. Both are good guns IMHO, so go with the one that fells the best when its in your hand. Just because the Taurus may seem to be made more "cheaply" sometimes the cheaper guns are just as reliable. I have one gun that I bought for $300 NIB with a Bianchi holster and that handgun has never failed to feed or jam even after about 10000 rounds threw it.

The Ruger which is a fine and rugged revolver. The Taurus is worthless in my books.

I like the ruger because it is a little beefier, and thicker. I like the grips better.

You may want to reconsider & look into purchasing a S & W Revolver.** Much better quality and performance & balance.** I prefer the four (4) inch barrel.**
