You need to do this:

PUT A CLEAR BOTTLE OF WATER IN THE CENTRE OF YOUR GARDEN.

The reason for this is that cats see their reflection in the bottle and get scared so therefore they stay away from your garden. My friends and neighbours have tried this method and surprisingly it works! If you have a larger garden use more bottles.

Try this method as it I know it works!

Gd luck

If you eat oranges and grapefruit, the peelings may deter the cats from using your garden. The only other thing you could do (without using something that would be toxic to the cats or your children) would be to put a fence around your garden. The cats may still use it, but the kids won't be able to get into it.

(There are some repellents you could spray around the perimeter of the garden, but you'd need to reapply after it rains or after you water the garden so it will cost you a lot of money and smell worse than the cat poo).

If you have bare patches of soil in your garden or large planters they'll attract cats. One thing you can do is stick bamboo canes into the ground close together so that the cats simply can't get to the soil. You can keep them short, but that might not be wise with your children around. There's also ultra-sonic devices available which emit a sound that cats can't tolerate but I'm not entirely sure they work.
If you know where the cats are from you could pick up the poo in a bag and take it back to the owner. It winds me up that cat owners are able to get away with not being responsible.

I think you can buy something from garden centers and I think I also saw it in Wilkinsons as well. It is a chemical though so you may not wish to try it if you have kiddies. I assume it's none toxic to humans but, it's still chemicals. I don't know off the top of my head what it's called but it's a powder that you put around the garden and they keep away from it. There is also a plant that I think they hate and avoid that you can plant - ask your local garden center about it.
Edit
I just found this site. It may have something of use on it.

This site has a plant and gel that's a cat deterrent

PLEASE PLEASE dont try old wifes tales . There is a product you can buy especially for this , you can get it from 'pets at home' and other big pet stores. It is called wash and get off you can use it inside your house or out in the garden. It is a spray that WILL NOT HARM THE STRAY ANIMALS but will stop them from fowling in your garden it is about 4 pound and each application lasts up to twelve weeks , ive had my bottle for 3 months used it 3 times and it has stopped the strays fowling 100 %. and i still have some left. Not bad for the price!!!!

There's a product called "Pet Repell" you can buy at PetSmart you can sprinkle around areas you want to keep wandering pets out of. Also I use moth balls (the round ball type) and burying them in the ground around the perimeters of flowerbeds/garden areas that I want to keep squirrels away from. I might work for cats. Just be sure and bury the balls to protect birds from eating them. (it's the smell sensitive animals noses can detect that works.)

I love the way some people think that telling the owners will help. What is a cat owner supposed to do about their cat going to the loo around where they live. Cats are NOT dogs and DO NOT behave in the same way. Some people...

Buy your children a water pistol, cats will soon learn to keep away if they are sprayed with water when coming into your garden.
But explain why, not to hurt the cats, just to deter them from messing their playing area.

I have the same problem in my garden. The best way to stop these pesky critters from using your garden as a toilet is to put orange, lemon or lime peel round the edges of your garden. Cats hate it and it is eco friendly and cheap. cats really don't like citrus fruit.
