Please tell me it was the F-4 Phantom.
But only if it's true, of course.

Ok, thanks. But what was the first military jet to break the sound barrier then?

This was the first civilian jet to break the sound barrier.
The Glamorous Glennis, a Bell X-1A, piloted by Chuck Yeager in 1947. While Yeager was a USAAF pilot, the X-1 belonged to NACA, a civilian organization, and pre-cursor to NASA. This makes it the first civilain plane to break the sound barrier.
The first civilian pilot AND plane to exceed Mach 1 was George Welch, a test pilot for North American Aviation, flying the XP-86 Saberjet, also in 1947. The USAF had not accepted the F-86 yet, so technically, the prototype belonged to North American, making it a civilian aircraft. Welch broke Mach 1 in a purposeful dive over Muroc (later re-named Edwards) AFB. Both pilots broke the sound barrier within 48 hours of each other, at the same base.

The first aircraft to break the sound barrier was the Bell X-1, but it was rocket-powered. The X-1 was also not a true aircraft, as it could not take off and land under its own power.
The first jet aircraft the fly faster than the speed of sound in level flight was the North American F-100 Super Sabre.

the first jet to break the sound barrier was designated as an x fighter and was launched from an airborne platform. it was piloted by Chuck Yeager out of Edwards AFB. And here's the good part...Yeager had a broken arm when it happened!

What Miss Gladys dosent realize is that when an aircraft is built under develpment for the military, with military funding and contract. It is a MILITARY aircraft from the second the first rivet is hammered.

It was'nt a jet, it was more of a rocket "Glamorous Glennis" by "Bell" aerospace, piloted by "Chuck Yeager". The first production model was (I Think) the F-100 Super Sabre, (A.K.A the "LEAD SLED")
