I feel saddened by all the terrible problems in Africa. I want to help solve them. I live in orange county so I would like to volunteer in or near that area for a legitimate organization that is actually effectively doing something to solve a real problem.

There's a place called ONE that Bon Jovi helps with. Also Samaritan's Purse, Feed The Children, Mercy Corps, etc. There's a bunch of them that are good & use a majority of the funds on actually helping. But many of the problems over there are religious and/or political so it severely hinders the amt. of help allowed.

Every generation for years has tried to help Africa. I personally feel you should help your own before worrying so much about a continent thousands of miles away. Or at minimum both. There are thousands that live in rural Appalachia that still have no electricity or clean running water. No access to a dr. or clinic or even had transportation and/or money for gas to get to a job if there was one available. They live in a 1 or 2 room (not bedroom) shack made of discarded lumber & tar roofs or trailers 50 yrs. old. Their only heat coming from a coal or wood stove & if they are really lucky they have a fan for the summer to circulate the hot, humid air. Many don't even have that.

Welfare & SSI don't give them enough to move. Because the land is so undeveloped it's basically worthless to anyone besides themselves. Few have more than a minimum of education. Rarely enough to even go to college if they could get a complete scholarship to live on site. Even then they'd need money to get there & it would mean those left behind would have to sacrifice (maybe starve) for a month to afford it.

But too many don't want to look in their own backyard & see how bad it is because that feels like an obligation. Thousands of miles a way it feels like a sacrifice to feel good about yourself.

So many are stunned to find large parts of appalachia are every bit as desperate as Africa. The only difference is the land's not raped, but cutting down trees isn't easy either w/o tools. So gardens are limited in size. But neighbors often are miles away so you have no one but your family to turn to. No public transportation & if they have a car it's usually a junker pieced together & barely kept running so it can only be used for neccessities.

That's a shame that needs correcting before we run off helping others. It's both an African-American & white problem because many of the blacks here are the descendents of slaves, used, then freed by their masters with little to nothing else. Many of the whites here are descendents of those who toiled in the coal mines & owed their soul to the company store & also had nothing until the coal companies abandoned the land after raping the land's insides.

If you are a member of a Church, synagogue, missionaries are always wanted to go to places where the need is the greatest. Ask about the subject at your affiliation. You must pray and god you help you find your way, really, that works just like that.
