Uh, it might be nice to have a heads up so you are prepared when the child is born, but I'd probably just go ahead and opt to have the test after it is born if needed so I can see its smiling face first. Society would definitely lose if such embryos were aborted. Those conditions say nothing about what that individual can contribute to society.

What makes you think people would abort a child for any of these reasons to begin with? Learning disabilities are highly treatable at minimal cost. Society loses anytime it it disregards a human life as invaluable. Worked in human genetics, the idea is for parents to be tested and thus weigh options of adoption, if they have a high chance of a child w/a catastrophic illness. Saw many families have one child after another w/thallesemia, who all died under 2 yrs and a heartbreaking 2 years at that. It didn't change their decision to keep trying for a healthy infant of their own.

I have multiple sclerosis. I know that science is in the process of pointing out the genetic factors that attribute to the disease.
I also have 3 beautiful babies. If the day comes when science can give me a definitive answer to whether any of my babies has inherited this disease I think I would be selfish not finding out. It would hurt me very much...more than words can say, but if I have the opportunity to have a heads up, it couldn't hurt.

I would never, could never, abort my baby.

I'm glad that this kind of test wasn't available in the past 7 years, because if it were I might have never have known my 3 angels. I would have been too scared to start my family.

unfortunately, there are so many false positives. i honestly don't know what i would do if the kid was retarded- i would still love them no matter what, but what about after i die, who will take care of someone who doesn't understand poop belongs in a toilet?
