If you have a vga-to-component cabe, I'd go with component. Otherwise, go vga-to-vga.

I sometimes will connect my laptop to my 720p HDTV with a 6 foot vga cable (my HDTV has a vga input). My laptop will sense the HDTV and adjust the resolution to 1280x720. I can then put a movie in my laptop's dvd drive and get HD quality picture. (There are some uninformed people out there that says you can't get HD quality from a pc/laptop, but sadly, they are incorrect.)

good luck and post your decision, ok? I'd like to know how it went.
