I understand what you are saying. If the church was built upon Peter, and this is the basis of christianity, aka the catholic church, than what right did the protestants have from breaking off and thus pretty much every other christian sect in the US. It is a question I often wondered when people bash mormons for breaking off from traditional christianity.
Mormons dont believe that the Catholic church ever had the authority from God to establish the christian church. We believe the priesthood authority and prophetic authority was removed from the earth because had it stayed it would have been corrupted by the people after the time of Christ and the apostles.
That is why the church of God, that of the Bible, had to be restored along with the priesthood authority and the keys of Gods kingdom.
We dont claim any priesthood or doctrinal authority thru the Catholic church whatsoever.
The only thing we agree with is that the Bible was an inspired piece organized to keep his word alive while the church was not on the earth.
We also believe the protestant movement was inspired because the Catholic church had split so far from the original teachings of Gods church that these splits helped lead to the eventual restoration and acceptance of his true church. It is also why the US was established, with a Constitution that allowed for freedom of religion. Some people believe that masons held onto some ideals and symbolism from the original church and helped Joseph Smith really understand and accept the truth. That isnt doctrinal, just some peoples thoughts on the subject.

If you don't agree with the Catholic church and feel it's wrong why are you suppose to stay there!
I strongly disagree with the Catholic church. I have never been a member and never will be.
I think you are being insulting to say we have to be Catholic and that we have no right. Who are you to take away our freedom of religion?

I was raise Catholic but over the years have found a lot of things that do not set well with me. They no longer lived their religious beliefs as Christ did, and were telling us to do things against our better judgment (The creator gave us free will and a brain to decide right and wrong) I am not a sheep that is led to slaughter so I felt that this was not my path. And to ask someone a question in that choice of words is a bit insulting. The path I now follow feels the right one for me!

What gives anyone the right, is God who gave man "free will" to choose for himself, and the constitution of the United States which gave its citizens freedom of religion.

It happens when a Catholic realizes that their doctrine is flawed by studying the Word of God for themselves.

It's 'works'. And yes, God did state in his holy word that "you shall know them by their fruit (false prophets)". Look at the past 1,000 years and tell me if I'm wrong.

What gives you the right to think that we don't have the right? We have free will to do whatever we want.

I found that God to be cruel and demanding. I did not want to worship a God who demanded that I fear him. That religion just didn't work for me. So I found one that did.
