Compare both bikes if they're at the same price point. Personally, I sort of prefer Cannondale, but on their full suspension bikes they like to do things they're own way, and if you need to change stuff later it might be harder.
Test ride the models and decide on your best option based on fit, I think that all 3 bikes are good for a begginer platform.

I do not know much about the canon dale, but I can tell you this the trek bike has been one of the best of all round for my son. He has done everything on it. from riding it in the mountains to changing it into a trick bike and jumping and flipping in all directions. So I would chose trek over the other any day until someone prove me wrong.
I think it is up to the what components on the bike and the sales man who wants to sale you the most expensive bike he has.

Both are really good. Cannondales are made in the USA, which is nice. I think Treks are as well. I have a Trek7000, which I do like. I have a Cannondale road bike, which is the lightest, stiffest frame you can buy. I'd probably buy the Cannondale because they tend to be lighter, but you'll do fine with either. Get the bike that has the lightest/best wheelset.

Either are very good bikes. Bad thing about cannondale is that the crank and some other vital components are ones that only fit cannondale. Where as trek uses stock shimano components.
I actually have seen a lot of the new bianchi CTC's on the road and they are really nice bikes.

Rich Z perhaps you should get out more - Cannondale do not make the "lightest, stiffest road frame you can buy!" - far from it!
I am not a fan of American bikes but out of the two I reckon the TREK is the better bike.

It comes down to components and what you want/need. Cannondale makes far superior bikes to Trek generally. Since you are a leisurely rider, either will suit you fine.

Both have great bikes. It's what is the best for what you want to spend. What they have available at certain price levels would determine which I would buy.

Test drive both bikes. If you didn't see much difference, then flip a coin.
