If you want to call the Bible religion, then yes. It has given the world a set of ethics that are timeless. We know from congressional records that the Bible was the most often quoted authority at the constitutional congress. It started out in chaos, with everyone fighting each other. It was not until Franklin moved that prayer be offered at the beginning of each session that they even began to come to terms.

Yes. Open your local phone book and look up hospitals. If there are any with "St." in there name, or "Christ", or "Jewish" then that's a contribution.

Check out the charities that your local "United Way" supports. I'll bet you find at least a couple you think are worthwhile. Well, United Way started as a religious organization.

Ever go to the YMCA, or the YWCA?

Those are some of the more material contributions. Historically, Religion has played a part in advancing scientific research, social reform, and law. Additionally, most of the great people in history were guided, at least in part, by their faith.

There have never been any true "non-religious" countries (even the United States, with it's separation of church and state, is a reflection of a set of religious beliefs,) so it would be difficult to assess exactly how influential religion is to a society.

It has, but not on purpose. One example I can think of is the fact that because of religion, Charles Darwin was afraid to publish his discovery of natural selection for 20 years. During those 20 years he studied and looked deeper and deeper, so that by the time he did publish he had a very very sound theory indeed.

Oh high priced. right here we bypass as quickly as extra with Islamist fanatics. Why does not he declare that Mohammedans invented chemistry, plastics, found out penicillin, invented the jet engine, created the western musical scale, and have been the known to sail to New Worlds in u.s. and Australia. Come on - do it effectively. i should be extra effective stimulated if Islam had produced a philosophy of religious tolerance, had spoken out in opposition to slavery, had brought about conversion to their faith with out concern, stress, coercion or executions. Then it ought to declare some sort of righteous priority over Christianity, Taoism, paganism and the entertainment. otherwise, Islam has produced little of benefit to the human race.

Many hospitals and universities were founded by Christians. Whenever a disaster strikes, it's Christian organizations like Samaritan's Purse and World Vision that respond.
Many of history's greatest scientists have been Christians.

Before religion we were barbarians, if you had something I wanted I could bash your brains out for it. Religion made us feel there were possible consequences for our actions.

Also the Renaissance came to be because of religion, without religion we wouldn't have a lot of the great art work we have today. The church paid for it.

You know what? I think it's futile and pointless to think so deeply about religion. To me what it boils down to is: it doesn't make sense and therefore I won't let it impact my life. I think if religion was around then people would find other ways to clash. It's just in our nature.

Let's see. Witch burnings. Book burnings. Crusades against "infidels." Jihads against unbelievers. Fables for the weak-minded. Empty promises of a hereafter. Creationism (or its newer cousin, "intelligent design").

Are those the sorts of contributions you were thinking of?

Many people believe that Christianity was responsible for the spread of the western world. Which is kind of funny when really you think about it.
