It has been going on for only four days, but I have been living with back pain for years (I am 24) and coping without a doc or generally complaining.
My left side hurts deeply, like nothing else I have ever felt.
I had a full blood panel a few months ago (just an annual checkup, no reason), and the only slightly abnormal things were SLIGHTLY elevated glucose and liver enzymes. Triglycerides were also more than slightly high. Monocytes were VERY high (I have psoriasis, so my doc and I attributed it to this)... I don't think any of this is related, but thought I would add just in case.

it could be a fracture...have you fallen or anything lately? last dec i fractured a rib in gymnastics from trying to do a handstand against a wall. klol then the night i quit from the fact that im too tall for gymnastics, i fell in a gym running in my socks and fractured my sacrum [the plate shaped bone on your lower back] i didnt even know my rib was fractured until i fell in the gym. i thought it must just be normal pain. but it was sever..and then it got even worse after i fell. either way, you should really try to get to a doctor about it.

Assuming that this developed without the help of a fall or other trauma to the area, there are some things to consider and, most importantly, what is located in that area. Just at the base of the rib cage, or in that general area, is the kidney. You may have a small stone. Does the pain get severe enough at times to knock you to the floor before becoming dull? If so, it may be a kidney stone. I would make an appointment with the doctor and see if he wants some more recent studies to pinpoint the problem. Good Luck

Theres way too many things that could be causing this - some of them no big deal and some pretty serious. You can narrow down the possibilities: broken ribs hurt intensely when you cough or press on them; muscle spasms usually feel literally like very tight muscles and they are tender when you push on them. If its not these things, then it could be a pinched nerve coming from the spine, and if its not a nerve than its an internal organ and thats something that could be a minor problem like a kidney stone, or a more serious problem with an internal organ. If your not sure what is causing it, you should see a doctor tomorrow if possible.
