If there is a power greater than man, it could exist in any form from totally mindless energy to all powerful superbeing. To pick a point on the spectrum to make it a persona, we'll give it 1billion to 1 odds against. Given individual existance ranging from viruses to humans, we'll give it another billion to 1 against it being even remotely like humans would imagine. Even if it has the thoughts, emotions and so on, we'll have to give it another billion to 1 against it caring a bit about one species on this insignificant little dustball planet. To have the characteristics of any deity used in any religion, there goes another billion to one on the spectrum. To be specifically a particular deity, that a present religion follows, completely off the scale. To be the particular deity that your religion follows? hmmmmmm
Why am I suppose to believe this religion stuff again?

hairyfeet: Of course I'm making up my own odds, because along any given spectrum there are an INFINITE amount of points, not just a billion. I'm being very conservative. If you'd shake the cobwebs out, you'd know that.

jendawg: Reading the Bible is part of what brought me to my present beliefs.

adnama0021: I'm not interested in anyone following, just not expecting me to follow them.

Since a number of people are ignorant enough to bring up the mathematics of this question, I'll give the real odds. Infinity against any god existing, period.

Good point. I've always maintained that if there is a supernatural being then everyone is worshiping the same one, but giving it different names and attributes to fit with what the particular society could conceive of. However, I've never expected anyone to believe on the fact that I believe. Everyone has his or her reasons for his or her stance. I, of course, respect them all. But then, I get told I'm weird or wrong all the time.

LOL
All true. The half is glass full person will still tell you "Yes but there is that one......"
Faith is just that, faith. There is no proof, nothing concrete. You either believe or you don't. That belief doesn't make anyone better then anyone, smarter then anyone (well....not most times. Damn creationsist ruin it for everyone) or even any different. It makes us unique from other animals. Well at least as far as we know. If we find out dolphins are actually worshipping the coral when they squeak I am going to die laughing. And religion, when done correctly (key word there) hurts no one.
I do think just ONE god is silly. That makes no sense to me. Lots of gods, sure. One, no. Ironic...I know.
Plus, we drink a lot of mead. You really just can't hate that!!!

Religion is not a Science. It's not about odds. It's about belief. You must believe there is some immaculate being or something going on to ask a question like this. I believe in the one and only GOD . I'll tell you what if you don't believe, if you think the BIBLE is just a bunch of made up stuff, read it and it'll tell you all the things going on in the world today. The hurricanes, the flooding, the fires, the drought, the homosexuality, the disease. We are living in the last days my friend. Just read the bible and you'll never have to question your beliefs again. I PROMISE!

Arbitrarily assigning odds to something does not make those odds true. Your first "odds" don't even make sense - what are they "against"? You picking a random point on the spectrum, or the nature of any higher power actually being sentient?

Please, if you're going to make antireligious arguments, use facts and logic. Your "question" appeals to neither. No one is going to be convinced by someone babbling nonsense.

Hello,, to believe that someone or something will guide you down the path of life with some hope for the future. And be there when you stray away from that path and desire to return to the happiness that you knew before the life of confusion set in.

Religion forms an important part of the global economy. It keeps the cash registers ticking over. But there's absolutely no truth to it. Only a delusional fool would think that there is.

Cuz, it says in the bible...? =( ... and jendawg promised... ? and he's right... it did predict all of these very strange and unusual phenomena. Fires, floods, hurricanes... wow, if it weren't true how could it have predicted all of these uncommon things would occure at some point in the future?

Instead of presenting unscientific odds, look at the intrincacies of nature and the human body. The interdependence, the repeatability, the ordered progression and many other qualities cannot be random; they must be from an Intelligent Designer.
