During my early years in the USMC I didn't have a car and got along just fine. Had a bicycle (was a long distance road racer, so daily running/PT was a breeze). If you are going to be a sailor aboard ship, why pay for a car and insurance when you may be at sea for 6 months or more at a time. Most naval bases have bus system with limited hours of service. If you do buy a car, buy something cheap so you don't worry about it if you are gone for months. Best wishes on your future career in the Navy.

Actually, I had a car when I was in the Navy. I wasn't able to use it much because of my assignments. But I was stationed at the Pentagon a couple of times and it's great for getting around. However, one seldom needs one at sea, and you can't take it with you when deployed, so it doesn't do you any good overseas. When I needed a car for my work, I was able to get military transportation. When I needed it for recreation, I usually used the local method of transportation.... taxi, bus, or the local conveyance.
If you don't NEED a car now... you will probably be able to survive without one in the Navy.

I spent 3 years on active duty in the Navy and I did not have a car. Every base I was on had buses or taxis on the base. When I needed transportation off-base, I would use civilian buses, taxis or rented cars. I also had a bicycle that I was able to keep aboard the ship I was on.

I did 15 years in Uncle Sam's Canoe Club (stationed at NAS North Island, San Diego, CA.), and found my car to be a bit of a pain.
The only time I REALLY enjoyed having it was when I went back east to Rhode Island & Virginia for 9 months of school when I got commissioned... I drove across country and enjoyed having my car.
At one point I had to put my car into storage for 2 years.

you will not be allowed one in Boot Camp, and A school is iffy. Once you hit the Fleet it is entirely possible to get away without having one.

I would think you would want to have one. Taxi's around military bases charge quite a lot because they know the guys really want to get off base and go to those stripclubs (seeing as that is all there is to do around military bases)
