According to the Bible, we can't.
1 John 4:20 If someone says, "I love God," and hates his brother, he is a liar; for the one who does not love his brother whom he has seen, cannot love God whom he has not seen.

I admit your Q is very difficult and something to ponder on.
By believing in God we have faith and love even if we don't see him. We are reminded of Him through little daily miracles, love, happiness, and sometimes even suffering which is the inevitable.
Now, as for hating the neighbor that is a powerful word. Sorry, I don't think anyone "hates" their neighbor. IS the neighbor a nusiance, using drugs or drinking or tearing up the neighborhood. If that's the cause, then it's the guy's behavior that people don't like. Why should he be hated? Think about this I may like my neighbor Will, but I can't stand the loud parties or the yelling he does. Can't have nothing against him.

Yes, it does seem like that - but things are not always as they seem. I will answer this on the basis that perhaps you do want to make contact. GOD is not a person, but is an energy (which is LOVE). GOD is everything around us, EVERYTHING. You have to indicate that you want contact first - that's the way the system works. That is your free will, which they (any spiritual beings) will not over ride. The way to indicate you want contact is to LOVE everything, everyone around you. When you do this, you are loving GOD. It will then be returned to you, and you will gradually have communication with all that exists. The more LOVE you give out, the quicker your progress will be. Actually you have been getting some messages in a variety of ways to try and get you to exercise your free will and acknowledge that you want this contact - but you have not been able to recognise it. It has been beyond your PRESENT understanding. "Let those who have ears, hear and those that have eyes, see" LOVE and Peace to all, peacefromken.

Two important principles:
I. Each and every idea is born in the mind of a person, which can then be accepted by others because of three things: trust, consistency and personal experience. Since truth starts at an individual level, it also has to be experienced and accepted at the individual level; there is no absolute truth or proof which humanity can embrace all at once or collectively share.
II. A proof can only be provided for those things which exist in the present and are close to us in space and time, allowing themselves to be tested. No absolute proof can ever be provided for an event that happened in the past or could happen in the future, nor for any object that is beyond our reach.

Eww our neighbors are all sinful and gross. I know they must be cause like I heard from a friend who had a friend that tells a story you would not believe. What it's not sinful gossip if it's true - I mean come on! Snap. Whatever...(fingers in a 'W')
Because GOD has no imperfections and our neighbors remind us of ours. GOD does not make us feel, because GOD to most is just a far off ideal. Feeling and caring for others is just too much to ask.

one of the best questions I have read in awhile. if we say that we love God and hate our neighbor, God is not pleased. If we really and truly love and worship God, loving our neighbor will be come out of that. you are right, we have to do both because it says the commandments can be narrowed down to this= "Love the Lord your God, with all your heart, mind, soul and strength- and love your neighbor as yourself." God bless and have a great evening- and great day tomorrow.

Yes, good point. A lot of Christians do not follow the word of Christ. They pick and choose parts of the Bible to suit their beliefs, and work backwards from there.
True Christians are some of the most loving and accepting people you'll ever meet. Fake Christians are some of the most hateful and discriminatory. That goes for other faiths as well... Islam, for instance, or atheists who despise people of faith. Everyone has their reasons to hate, but that doesn't mean it's justified.

Thank you for the great question. Here is what Scripture says about the subject.
1 John 4:7 Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God. Anyone who loves is born of God and knows God. But anyone who does not love does not know God - for God is love.

Today, 977 people from two churches got together to paint houses in a poor section of the valley. I was one. The family at our house didn't speak English.
Their house is now the most beautiful home on the street. We left them a Spanish Bible that we all signed.
I look like I have leprosy. I have brown and white spots of paint all over. I'm so very tired. My wife went too and she's already in bed. My 15 YO worked at another house with a high school group.

As Christians, we shouldn't praise God and curse our neighbors with the same mouth. In the scriptures we are told not to, but unfortunately, for the time being, we are imperfect humans that don't always do as we should, and quite often do what we shouldn't. That's why we need Christ. Because God knew we couldn't do it on our own.
