If you have smoked marijuana consistently (essentially every day) for about 5 years and completely stop, how long will it take for all cognitive faculties to return to normal? For example, I have heard it can take up to a month or more for memory to return to a completely normal state. Any truth to this? What about other effects?

Some studies have said the brain does NOT recover after long-term damage has been inflicted.

Forget all these uneducated anti-cannibis losers who don't even know what they are talking about. Simply shouting out facts that have been imprinted on their brains since they could listen. Do some actual research. Marijuana does not change the brain and there is nothing wrong in your brain that is causing your depression. Marijuana was a big part of your life for 5 months and you are simply experiencing emotional withdrawal. Just like if you lost a good friend or a pet had died. Soon when your other things take marijuana's place in your life you will return to normal. You have done no damage and can easily support a healthy life style while smoking marijuana.

cognitive faculties? umm, there are no long term effects of you speaking ability. thats kinda worded weird.

well there have been many state funded (aka anti marijuana) studys in the past that used to say there was a detremental effect of marujuana use on the brain. recently almost all of them have been proven wrong. and actully now prove it has a place as a medicine for the brain.

" "Moreover, morphological impairment of the hippocampus [which plays a part in memory and navigation] of rat after administration of very high doses of THC (Langfield et al., 1988) was not shown (Slikker et al., 1992)" (translated). He concluded that cannabis does not have any neurotoxicity as defined in the report, unlike alcohol and cocaine.[18][19][20]"

is just one of many examples.

and actually there are tons of studies that show that marijuana can actuly help on the cellular division process in the brain (aka preventing tumers.) and

oh i guess I'm getting off topic. sort answer, your memory will go back to normal after the "high" wares off. although there are many other things going on in your body what is still unknown how long or what exatly they are.

I don't know that any of the scientific evidence on marijuana are factual. All studies done on marijuana killing brain cells have all been funded by the government. I feel that's their way of justifying making it illegal. Then that way legally they can sell it and distribute to doctors for medicinal use. It's government propaganda. It is true that it's a gateway drug. That's because of the mellow high. People with addictive personalities, don't get high enough on weed. After a long period of time so they eventually move on. To harder drugs.

I hate to say it but never. You have permantly damaged your brain. Its normal state will never be restored. Some other effects will slowly go back to a fairly normal state but most will be majorly effected for life. Sorry dude.

Neurons, unlike other cells in the body, do not regenerate. When they are gone, they're gone as are the functions that they performed.
