Could it have something to do with the fact that Christians think that Satan represents ultimate evil? Just a guess, mind you.
You can call yourself whatever you want but its foolish not to expect an unfavorable reaction.

So, your name is Satan? I am assuming that you are human, and not actually Lucifer, the fallen angel.
Having had some experience on both sides of this aisle, I would have to agree with you that most christians do not understand Satan, and we generally shy away from and fear things we don't understand.
Having said that, the fact that you don't understand why people in general fear Satanism gives me the impression that you don't have a firm grasp of human nature, nor the human psychological condition.
I am concerned that you cannot or will not grasp this basic psychological concept, and this leads me to wonder if you have the ability to grasp Satan's role in the spiritual world.
If you believe that Satan's motives are not harmful as a result of your religous beliefs, than I would have to say that you have been misled, and you should call your religous beliefs by some other name.
I am aware of the Church of Satan and their beliefs, but I will tell you very frankly that this is not where Satan conducts his business.
The bible describes Satan as an angel of light. His destructive work is usually cloaked in an illusion of "good intentions".
My favorite example of Satan's best work, is how a "prayer chain" in an evangelical church acts as a cover for pure gossiping activity - which always results in division in the church, and eventually dissolution. I have seen this happen too many times to rule it out as speculation.
Yes, Satan's best work is conducted by the self-acclaimed self-rightous, and I know you agree.
Now that I have your confidence, believe me that the real Satan will use you and destroy you.
You have the ability to think outside the box, and you feel you have gotten to know Satan. Now, you should get to know his creator so you can see the big picture.
Then you will really be able to argue circles around these self-rightous types, if that is your goal.

I agree that Christians tend to get on a "high horse" an awful lot of the time instead of taking a "Christian attitude" they always talk about when it comes to things. They spout hell and damnation too often and not much christian attitude and I'm not sure that's a very christian way to be (all smugness is intended).
Satanism is a religion, just like any other and I think they should take a little more christian-like attitude of "live and let live". I mean, if it's your choice, then so be it. After all, according to their religion, God gave us all a free will and people are just exercising it by choosing to believe or not believe in God......so stop all the fire and brimstone throwing.
It never ceases to amaze me at how un-Christian the so-called Christians are when confronted with people who don't believe in what they believe in. They really get ugly sometimes and that's not a very christian attitude. tsk tsk

I went to school with a couple of guys who are Satanists. They were in the First Church of Satan. I didn't have any problem with them. They kept to themselves and I minded my own business.
However, the Temple of Set, an offshoot of the First Church of Satan, has been more problematic in the Heathen/Asatru community. Some of the ToS members become a part of Asatru groups and try to get them to follow along with ToS rituals. We've kicked a couple of these types out of our groups, as we hate lying and cowardice.
I think this type of thing degrades their beliefs. After all, why should they need followers to make them feel secure, if they truly follow the Satanic principles? They should be proud of what they are rather than sneaking about like cowards.
Bottom Line: I think the First Church of Satan expresses true Satanism much more than ToS cringers.

There is a lot of misunderstanding about what Satanism really is. It also doesn't help that texts such as the Satanic Bible essentially blaspheme Christianity. People tend to get upset when their beliefs are attacked. If you want your religion to be understood, then the onus is upon you to explain it. To those who say you are going to hell for being a satanist, don't waste your time with them. If they can't be non-judgemental and open-minded they are hardly worth your intellectual energies.

Because the word "Satan" has negative connotations due to the widespread belief in Christianity.
People need to understand that Christianity was based on TOLERANCE (as was the US--*not* on Christianity or religion), and judging people goes against everything their "holy book" teaches.
I mean, think about it. When Jesus say Mary Magdalene, did he go up to her, tell her she was a dirty whore who was going to hell, and then begin to preach to her about how terrible she was and this, that, and the other? No! He accepted her and *forgave* her. Some Christians now would have done the exact opposite.
Anyway, just try to get through to them--offer then info on Satanism and such, y'know?

You are right, we have no right to judge you, God is the judge. I know that satan scares alot of people, he does this well and enjoys it. I use to be involved with him and he is not a very nice being. He wants to see us all in hell and will do whatever it takes to get us there. I don't think it is a great idea to worship and serve someone that has come to kill, steal and destroy. Everything he says is a lie and deceptiion. The only way that you are going to hell is by not accepting Jesus as your Lord and Savior and not that your name is satan.

People ALWAYS have the right to judge you. Being judgemental is a survival skill important to the survival of our species.
It is a natural reaction to potentially dangerous situations.
We attach meaning to abstract sound to form word and convey concepts.
Now, for a good portion of the western world, the name "Satan" conveys concepts such as evil, or liar, or at best - advesary. What's more - you (being an intelligent person) understand this reaction is most people.
Don't care for the reaction? Change your name.
Now - other intelligent people - ONCE they have used their instinctual judgement - find themselves once again in relative emotional safety ... will reflect and use their mental capacities to educate themselves on situations that they did not understand - and thus the fear of the unknown caused judgemental flight. After this, they can make a reasonable judgement.
If ... you would rather converse with those who use reflective thought after thier initial judgemental reaction - then keep your name.

well unfortunately people lash out on what they do not understand. It happens in all faith's. If you are secure in what you believe then it wouldn't matter what people think. I wont give you what the Word of God Say's concerning your plight because you already know what he Say's But your name is just that a name not a good one to choose but it is what it is.

A person's name cannot determine their eternal destiny. However, throughout much of history people have named their children names that had strength, character and beauty. The name satan has no good qualities in most people's minds.
Having said all that, the Bible makes it clear that people enter heaven or hell after death based on their acceptance/rejection of the salvation Jesus Christ purchased for them in his death and resurrection.
The Bible also makes it clear that God, Himself is the only true judge of the hearts of men. As people, we are too flawed to judge justly. God is perfectly impartial.
My offense with satanism is that it attempts to glorify someone who is not worth it. God is the only being who deserves to be worshiped. satan is a created being, not a deity. Worship is for God alone.
Now, I've attempted to answer your questions as though you seriously wanted answers. However, I'm not sure you want answers nearly as much as you want to stir people up to controversy. Take care.
