Before anyone dares to call me cheap and/or rude, let me start out by saying that I am a server. Last Thursday was my birthday, and I made a reservation at BJ's Restaurant with some of my friends (10 people total). I was told on the phone a 17% gratuity would be added and I gladly agreed to it. When we got there, the host sat us right away. And then we waited. And waited. Finally 10 minutes later a male server gets us some waters and tells us our server will be with us in one minute. 10 minutes later this grouchy girl walks over and gets our drink order. After she brings our drinks, she walked away, not even asking if we were ready, which we clearly were (menus stacked neatly at end of table). For the next 20 minutes, she walked by over and over, chatting with the her coworkers (no not busy with other costumers, I could understand if that was the case) and finally we had to flag her down to get our order. She was in a nasty mood, and very short, but we were all still polite.

Someone else brought our food, and then she only came by once to check on us. At the end she didn't offer dessert and dropped the bill. The total was 150.48 with gratuity included. Now ordinarily, I always over tip and would have left another $10 on top of the gratuity, but she was so rude, that I left $149.00. Just because gratuity is added, the costumer is never obligated to pay (if the service was good they should though). She had the audacity to tell me I shorted her two dollars, once again rudely, and I told her politely I was a waitress, and I would never dream on telling someone they shorted me after I gave them bad service. I told her the amount for the bill was all there and still a decent tip and she should be happy with that. I didn't complain to the manager, I wasn't looking to get her in trouble. I just don't understand why servers think they can give shitty service and expect to be tipped the gratuity. Was I wrong for saying something to her?

No way! You should question her. Too many people think they are entitled and no one is entitled to get anything. I would have given her less of a tip than you did. You could have gone to her boss. I think you did her a favor by giving her a tip and not getting her in trouble.

If you had a problem with her service a manager should have been called.
I hate that added gratuity to groups. My mom was a waitress so if service is decent you'll get a good tip but if I'm being told to pay x amount - you best be earning it .....

I would have pointed the waitress' rude and nasty disposition out to the manager. Managers can not be expected to see everything that goes on. It would do the waitress some good, if the manager spoke to her about her attitude.

We all know people do not want to be at work, but they do not have to take it out on the customers. That is just wrong.

You should have told the manager - not taken it up with her. The manager would have want to know so he could keep it from happening again. She might have been having an off-night but then again, who knows? She didn't deserve a dime if she did all that.

No, you weren't wrong, and I'm glad you tipped her at least something. I used to be a server too, so I understand both sides, and I think you behaved appropriately and correctly.

NO! You were NOT wrong.... Sadly, the EXACT same thing happened to me on my birthday... not a good bay to finish off your special day. If it were me though, I would have complained to the manager, just so that she would learn not to do that to the next customers.

You're stuck with the 17% no matter how crappy the service. But no, from your description, I'd have asked for another server.
