Muscle atrophy (or Muscle wasting) actually refers to the wasting or loss of muscle tissue resulting from disease or lack of use.

Disuse atrophy is used to describe when there is a loss of muscle due to lack of physical exercise.

The other type of muscle atrophy is called Neurogenic atrophy which occurs when there is injury or disease to a nerve.

First cut out all junk food and soda if you haven't already. Just stopping the soda can drop as much as 10-15 pounds (my hubby lost that much). Go for walks, at least 30 mins at a time a few time a week. Stretch, exercise and your dance classes should help you drop the weight. I have lost between 30-35 pounds this dance year by doing these things and I'm a lot older than you and as you age weight gets harder to come off.

The term is definitely atrophy. Hypertrophy is the exact opposite.
Hope this helps!
