Up until twenty to thirty years ago intelligence was looked up to, now it seems it's looked down on.

Are we experiencing devolution, if so why?

Asians and indians will take over the world, as they still value it. The descent of whites into white trash is quickening its pace, and the blacks and latinos are going nowhere.

I'm white. I see the rest of my race descending into a glamorized fantasy of iPod's, cars, beer, drugs, and sex. The blacks and latinos just plain don't value education. As I study late into the night, I see the only ones left in the library with me are the asians and the indians. The whites are getting hammered, blacks and latinos nowhere. They take it all for granted. This worlds going down if they're still in charge.

I don't agree, our schools are passing our child Thur the system, and If it was as important as it was twenty or thirty years ago, it wouldn't be happening, no child left behind is a joke, if they can read and write some, get a c on a curve, then pass them, so our children aren't as intelligence as I think they should be so blame the system, not devolution or what ever that word is.

Surely intelligence (and its affirmation through education) ascends in importance as our society becomes more complex and knowledge escalates. It would be a grave mistake for Americans to deduce that those who are the Brain Trust of our country are not to be admired and emulated. I can, however, understand how you have come to reach the conclusion you cite in your question. It seems often that education in this country is dismissed as being unnecessary, boring, useless, but, of course, such rationalizations are erroneous. If we do not aspire to intellectual superiority in this country, we will lose our exalted positon in the world. Thus, I am hopeful that we are not, in fact, currently experiencing devolution!

I've experienced it first hand, being in high school. The popular treat intelligence with a taboo that I can't understand.

This isn't devolution in the sense of the theory of evolution, but in the scope of things, yes, it is devolution.

You proceed from a false assumption. With our dependence on technology, intelligence is as, if not more, important than ever. It's simply that specialized knowledge is possessed by fewer and fewer people, which is the way it should be. If it wasn't for all the dingbats who don't know how to use Windows System Restore, I wouldn't make as much money as I do.

I don't see how you came to that conclusion. With the advent of modern machinery making work easier there is less importance on mundane work with more emphasis placed on the design and manufacture of ever increasing complexity.
In years to come if you do not have any kind of degree there will be less and less work available that will sustain a healthy lifestyle.
There is more pressure to think ahead these days than ever before.
Many students today are learning how to solve problems we don't even have yet.

Just because the U. S of A is degenerating doesn't exactly spell doom for humanity! On a serious note, I have to agree with Serpico7 about the situation of blacks and latinos and sadly I don't see that changing anytime soon.

We are experiencing a resurgence of stupidity at one end of the curve and an explosion of intellect at the the other end. Each person must make a choice as to where they wish to be on the knowledge curve.

the very people who look down on anyone smart and savvy are the ones with the low IQ.......the masses are asses.....we need young ignorant folks to run our McDonald's and become expendable puppets for our military complex because foreign labor is becoming more educated and costly. As a whole,America has more culturally illiterate people than any other industrial nation......

what i find that is scary is as a rule the more intelligent you are the less children you have on average----we might find ourselves truly devolving someday because of this-also with the increase of medical procedures the genetically inferior are breeding and that can come back to haunt us--this might get me some thumbs down but doesnt change facts---enjoy the night

Your question is poorly phrased. Intelligence is still important but it seems sports stars and celebrities have eclipsed that importance. But that does not mean intelligence is not still important.

The universities are still turning out doctors and engineers, physicists and rocket scientists and will continue to do so no matter how much time the media wastes on Britney's latest peccadilloes.
