Are police scanners legal to own and use in NH and Maine while driving? How much are they? How do I find out what frequency I need? A friend of mine is wondering. Thanks!

Just answer the question! Legal or not? It is not intended to commit a crime.

U wanna know why I wanna know? My friend complains about cops using their radio while driving by and they look straight at her. I just wanna find out to see if I can get her one, so she can find out what they are saying. NO crimes committed! Just answer the question.

Yes they are legal to have as long as you don't use them to interfere. In order to get a good one you're going to have to spend about $200.00. I highly recommend the Pro-97 from Radio Shack. It's triple trunking, and stores 1000 frequencies. As for the frequencies, go to radioreference.com, it's the best, most comprehensive site for frequencies of police, fire, medic, emt, ham, you name it. It is also very frequently updated. I've got a good deal of experience with these things, so if you have any questions email me directly, joshua.queen@yahoo.com.

A police scanner is a unit we use in our homes to monitor police activity. What you're talking about is not a scanner, it's a "radar detector." When your friend purchases one, she'll find out the frequency. Tell your "friend" not to speed & then she won't need a radar detector.

Radio Shack will carry the best assortment, but you can get them at Wal Mart too in the car audio section. For the frequencies you need to get the trade paper back called "Police Call" from your local Radio Shack again. While there ask the very helpful sales person there about programming it and switching between frequencies. He may even know what the local PD, Fire, EMS, tow truck companies, and public works radio frequencies are.
My local Shack owner had all of them printed out on a sheet of paper he sold for fifty cents.

tell your friend why does he/she want to possess a police scanner, unless you're planning to commit a crime?

Just keep thinking that you are not committing a crime when you get caught with one in a vehicle. You will have you mind changed very quickly and your wallet lightened considerably.
