time usage? maybe thats not a good idea, kids who actually have a time limit, are prone to sneaking more. this is how i was! don't do it!! maybe u should limit tv too? there is the same stuff on there! if u absolutely have too, then 2hrs...i guess

I'm a primary teacher and have taught reception for 8 years. I have also been acting head for 2 years. I find this totally unacceptable and if I had a parent coming to me with this problem I'd have taken direct action immediately and ensured that the problem never happened again. I find it amazing that the children are not supervised closely enough to let it happen in the first place as every school I have worked in, children's toilets and unstructured times such as lunch and play are usually where staff are most vigilant. There are a number of avenues you can take though - you can speak to the LEA yourself and make a complaint and also contact the head of govenors/ parent govenor for your school - this will mean your complaint will have to be dealt with and external forces will act on your behalf within the school. Good luck and act now because as you are aware the foundation years are so important to how your child will progress through school

Whatever you decide, you need to make sure she is being monitored when she is online. Where is the computer located? It should be in an area where everyone can see what she is looking at all the time. Is there a reason she is online? I wouldn't let her get on anytime she wanted to either. It's good you are trying to find a specific time for her. If you don't set a time, it will eventually begin to affect her schoolwork or household chores. You should also filter and block sites so your daughter won't go into anything she doesn't need to see. Sometimes things pop up unexpectedly even when you don't mean for them to. If you are gone and your daughter is home alone, have a password so she can't sneak on the computer. It is up to you as the parent to make sure your child's innocence is protected. All it takes is one click and her mind will be polluted with things she shouldn't even be thinking about. Once it's in her mind, it will always be there. Definitely keep these things in mind as you are trying to set up a time for her to be on the computer. Hope this was helpful for you.

Well, I think there's no problem with limiting it to around 1.5-2.5 hours after school, or in the morning, but I don't see the point in limiting computer use at night. If she's like most kids I know, she would probably just spend her time before bed doing things like watching TV, and the computer is much more educational and healthy than 90% of shows on TV anyway.

Oh....what a pain in the @ss huh? I am the mother of 2 girls one is almost 13 and one is 14...I limit them to about 1 hour each but only at 30 minute intervals. They are only allowed to use it when their homework and chores are done. They of course, like to be on myspace, but only if I am in there with them. I am a little frightful of what can happen on those types of forums. When their is no adult home....the computer is not accessible.....it is in a room that is locked.
I think 1 hour is way more than enough when you consider how much T.V. they watch and how much they talk on the phone.

what is so wrong about kids being on the internet, parents need to get over it. ITS INTERNET its not hurting anyone, its something to do to pass the time away.
i feel internet is more of a learning expierience then television.
you can learn a lot from the internet.
but it depends what shes doing.
i just dont get why parents are always " oh how long should i let my daughter/son stay on the internet "
its like WHO CARES.
ITS INTERNET GET OVER IT.
its not killing her by being on it.
shes spending her time the way she wants.
and by you saying get off or whatever, is just going to piss her off and make her want to be on it more, chanses are if you tell her she can be on it whenever she wants, she will be on it less then if you were to tell her she can only be on it for a certain amount of time.
trust me, im 15 and my mother lets me go on the computer whenever i want, she even got me a computer in my room.
and im on it a lot less then i was when she made me have a time limit.
take my advice please.

i have 3 kids each one has a university degree two are engineers one is a medical doctor. i limited TV to no cable and the computer to school work use and then one hour more each day for fun. i think this is in part why they each did so well.

Does she use it for homework? If so, I'd try and evaluate how much time she uses it for homework, and then maybe give her an hour or so for "browsing" time.
Try and monitor, for the most part, what she's doing. If she's really using it for educational purposes, then perhaps grant her a little more time. If she's doing a lot of chatting, be careful. An hour should be plenty.
