In Catholics theology and other Christian denominations:
Archangel Michael is referred to as the archangel of death, carrying the souls of the dead to heaven.
In Judaism there is 6: Gabriel (kings), Kapziel (youths), Mashbir (animals); Mashhit (children), Af (man) and Hemah (beast).
Puriel and Dokiel appear in the Testament of Abraham as being charged with examining the soul of each person brought to heaven after death.
In Judaism, the angel of death takes on whatever form suits his needs.
Whether or not these are just myths or considered "real" in their respective religions, I cannot say.

The Angel of Death is not supposed to be good or evil but a neutral faction.
Death comes to everything and it is there to see it along.
much like the story of c heron and his river Styx.
He seems gloomy and dreary in its depictions of a large black robe and sickle. That image I think came about as popular of it during the dark ages esp during the Black Plaque days.
So try not to look at the Angel of death as bad or good, just inevitable and hope that you do not see him personally in a long time!!
I loved the episode in Charmed with the Angel of Death and Prue.

Death is happening to the body every second
Cells are dying to be reborn
I love the angel of death
Death of a situation, a relationship, a job, it is just an ending making way for the new.
When the spirit/soul leaves the body it is change.
Do not fear death.

I don't think there is a description of death given in The Bible and "the angel of death" is only the tenth Egyptian plague. I don't think "angel of death" is mentioned anywhere else. Remember "Touched By an Angel" isn't necessarily true.

Actually Yamaraja (The superintendent of death) is dark. Though he is a servant of Krishna and just doing his service, of giving the hellish sentence to the fallen souls. The Yamadutas (servants of Yamaraja) are very scary looking fellows and described in great detail in the Srimad Bhagavatam 5th canto. srimadbhagavatam.org/... can be read on line. But for those who leave this body thinking of God, they do not die in darkness, they leave this body in light and the Vishnu duttas come to take them (their soul) to the eternal world or the material heaven. Vishnu duttas look just like Lord Vishnu with 4 arms and are very beautiful servants of Vishnu. Only the very sinful see the Yamadutas and it is a dreadful situation. The movie Ghost with Patric Swazi is a good description of how they yank the soul from the body with a noose and drag the sinful living entity to get their judgment for sinful reactions. This knowledge is taken from the Buddhist understanding which is also understood in the Vedas. Maybe you don't see it as dark, because you act according to the laws of nature and aren't going to die in darkness. Those who actually know the Absolute truth, (God),also known as Krishna, Allah, Jehovah, Vishnu, Rama ect., do not die they die to live forever.

The angel of death is neither good nor evil. It is neutral. I can't think of a good image though for the angel of death. Nobody really wants to see it appear infront of them knowing that it's their time to go.

The angel of death has his job, but not all people that die see him.....usually when you do die, your guide is usually the first one to guide you unless you have some unfinished business to why you don't want to go, or for whatever reason it is your stuck in the lower dimensions... usually not knowing that you're dead.
The angel of death is not evil, death is not evil, it's a new beginning to our destiny.

Jesus is a much brighter version of death. If you read scripture properly, there is no heaven or hell until Jesus returns, then there is a second death or an eternity of life in peace. This means there is no purgatory, there is no eternity of burning and torture. When you die, you are dead, your spirit sleeps until he returns and makes judgment, If you refuse to repent you die forever, if you choose to follow you live under his love forever.

I've always thought the bright light when you die is the angel of death. That's a more common version. (Don't go to the light)
