The Pope earns no salary.

However three bags containing gold, silver, and copper coins are placed in the coffin beside the body of a dead pope. Each bag contains one coin for each year in his reign, the only monetary compensation he receives for his service as pope.

There are several problems associated with applying for the position:
1) The current Pope must be deceased before there is an opening!
2) The requirements for the candidate hoping to fill the position are rather stringent (e.g., you must be male, a Roman Catholic, and a member of the College of Cardinals, preferably rather elderly).
3) An American (if that is your nationality) has never been selected for the position even though the electee must have a command of the English language.
4) Fluency in Italian is also a requisite.
As for the salary, I have no information; however, the renown and power which the position offers may be worth more than mere money!
Anyway, best wishes for your pursuit of your career aspirations!!

Clergy still pay taxes. They get all sorts of benefits though. They actually fall under the same tax code as the military does.

the pope, pat robertson, and james dobson have each devised their own way of determining what they keep:

pat robertson: toss the money in the air and 'heads, it's God's-tails, it's mine'

james dobson: a bucket in the middle of a huge room-toss the money in. 'what lands in the bucket is God's. what hits the floor is mine'

pope-toss the money in the air-'God can grab what He wants on the way down'

Every penny of it. The church gets all its money tax-free...but loves to get involved in things that affect the tax-payers.
