My boyfriend is a British citizen and he needs to get a passport, but the part about the countersigner stumps him because he doesn't know anyone who can sign for him.
We do know someone who got a passport a few years back and used a barman as a countersigner, but we don't see "Purveyor of Liquid Entertainment" in the list of acceptable signers. Did they get strict or can one ask anyone to countersign?

Your GP can sign or teacher...basically any upstanding member of the community that knows you.

It's always been pretty strict, but now it's got worse. You have to be an upstanding member of the community, eg doctor, minister, teacher, but now you have to hold a passport as well, and you have to have known the person for 3 years. Hope this helps.

Im a Brit and if im right the person who signs has to have known you for at least 3yrs and also has to be British.I recently replaced mine but as it was to replace a lost one I did not need someone to countersign. So if his has not expired he should make a copy of its number then make out he lost it.I live in Dc so it was easier for me as I could go to the Embassy but you should be able to find details of passport req or find a Brit nearby to sign.Good luck.

NO - you cannot get just any one to sign - it has to be a person from the acceptable list - and yes they do check - a friend of mine who is a teacher has been asked a number of times to verify that he did sign xxxxxx's passport application and that he did know them. - maybe because as a teacher he signs quite a lot for his pupils - but they check on him.
