Thailand, a very easy country to live
- the cost of living is very cheap
- thai people are easy going and very kind (not every single person of course but most of them are)
- there are lots of beautiful places to visit: beaches, mountains, resorts and spas, nightlife, etc.
- thai people usually like foreigners and feel good about them
- there are various kinds of food in Thailand you can enjoy, not only thai food itself but also other countries' traditional foods. most of them are really yummy and cheap.

I wouldn't say one is safer than the other, Sean M. That is as truthful as it gets.
I live in the Philippines, but I have traveled extensively in Thailand, including the northern regions, as well as the resort destinations Phuket (and the surrounding islands) and Pattaya. All the while I am in Thailand, I am as safety-conscious as I am in the Philippines.
In fact, I think that if there are 2 countries in the world that can be twins, they would be Philippines and Thailand. There is no other country I have been too that comes closest to the Philippines in almost all aspects but Thailand.
Consider:
1. The population is about the same
2. The economies of these 2 countries are similar. In fact, once upon a time, the exchange rate versus the dollar was the same.
3. We are both (almost) unaffected by military intervention in government. Coup d' etat? Thailand and Philippines has lots of those.
4. The nightlife in Thailand is legendary, very hot. Philippines comes very very close - - - unless you haven't been to the strip in front of Heritage Hotel.
5. There are con artists in Thailand, as well as in the Philippines. Almost the same modus operandi. Even taxis that overcharge foreigners are regular occurences in both countries.
Thus, I can not see one country being better, or safer, than the other.

Both countries have upsides and downsides.
Most Filipinos speak english, whereas in Thailand, there are few.
If you are thinking about getting a job, then I'd say Thailand (i believe) has more to offer, because there are lots of unemployed people in the Philippines (despite having diplomas). that is why most Filipinos go abroad to get a job, even if the job they are going to have is in no way related to their profession (i.e., doctors work as nurses abroad. physical therapists work as caregivers abroad, teacher work as domestic helpers, etc, etc, etc).
When it comes to security, I'd say there are cases that foreigners in the Philippines are more likely to be victimized, but don't get me wrong, being a foreigner in the Philippines doesn't mean you're in big trouble. There are still safe places in the Philippines. Luzon (northern part of Manila) is the safest place there. Cebu isn't that bad, and there are so many beaches and resorts you'd enjoy. Mindanao (Sorry to all Filipinos from Mindanao, I have nothing against you, but I just have to tell the truth) is so far the risky place in the Philippines (that is where Abu sayyaf group is located).
I rarely hear about kidnappings and all that stuff in Thailand, so I'd say it MIGHT be a more secure place.
When it comes to the cost of living, there would be no argument, PHILIPPINES is the best place!
Friendliness of the locals? PHILIPPINES of course! Hey, I am not being bias here, but you may ask Americans who have been in the Philippines, or better yet watch TFC! lol!

Hmmm....in the Philippines they seem to speak English ( or american ) more widely than here in Thailand, and I believe it is much cheaper to live in the Philippines too. However, unemployment is far greater as is the risk of being a victim of crime. So, I would have to say the better place has got to be Thailand.......but this is only my personal choice
