Generally when one says jaw surgery, you think of surgery on the mandible or lower jaw bone. It is sawn apart on both sides and carefully repositioned, then wired shut. You cannot eat solids for about six weeks. Although there are complications, none of my patients that had it experienced it.

A person with a cleft lip may need surgery on the upper jaw, or maxilla. Other than surgery for cleft lip and palate, my experience is limited.

If your oral surgeon or craniofacial surgeon has the proper experience and credentials, and you are dissatisfied with your present appearance or function, then go for it. But have a long talk with the surgeon first.

Orthognathic surgery is used when a skeletal imbalance occurs between the upper and lower jaws. This is a very sophisticated surgery and should be done by Oral Surgeons in a hosipital setting. I recommend a University Hospital with the chief oral surgeon as consultant. University faculity are usually in on the latest techniques in orthognathic surgery. A CT scan should be used and stereolighographic skelatel model from CT data should be made and used in treatment planning. Special consideration needs to be done to locate the TMJ in a physiologic position so as not to cause TMJ syndrome later on, however TMJ syndrome can occur with of with surgery and the surgery if done well could prevent this chronically painful problem.

Personally, if it were me, i would want both. I would want the plastic surgery to correct my cleft lip, and the jaw surgery to correct the bone. I do have to warn you, jaw surgery is a painful and timely recovery.

My opinon is this. If you are a woman it would be beneficial to your psychological well being if it works. If you are a guy I'd tell you to grown a short well trimmed beard. A REAL woman is not turned off by these little physical flaws of nature in a man but it never works when a woman has them. Life just isn't fair that way. In a man...they are often found to be quite attractive. No kidding...it would never be a detraction for this gal...I mean that. It's what is in your heart that matters. Best wishes from a real woman who also likes a nice beard...
