if someone were to ask me that I would very sweetly tell them that I'm old enough to recognize a rude question when I hear one but young enough not to be bothered

First of all women want to be young and feel young. Yes it's rude to ask a lady her age, "If", you have NO friendship with them. It's a matter of respect and privacy.
Its like asking a male what's your waste size? Or something that is personal, which is really not your business to be asking in the first place.
Look at the magazines and beauty products out there that women buy this should give you some hint.

Asking anyone, male or female, a personal question in a 'harsh and sarcastic manner' is extremely rude and aggressive behaviour. In doing so, you are not only disrespecting the person you ask (the sex of whom is irrelevant), but also yourself, by demonstrating to everyone within earshot what a stupid pig-ignorant tosser you are.

I think you know that that would be very disrespectful... 1) You should never ask a lady her age and 2) If you do ask her her age, at least be sensitive about it not sarcastic.... Surely you know that though!
How would you react if someone spoke to you in a sarcastic manner? Expect women to react in the same way!

It's always disrespectful to put someone on the spot by asking a question you have no business asking. For some reason, women are made to feel as if they have no right to get older, and it sounds as if you're describing a question asked as a criticism.

Well, whether it's disrespectful or not depends on who's being asked. It would bother some but not others.
Me, it would bother me, pretty much no matter what my age is...
And for people that ask me questions that I don't want to answer, I just smile and ask very sweetly: "Why do you want to know???" It shuts them up pretty much every single time....

I'm guessing it's in the context of someone accusing her of not acting her age. It's always rude to be harsh and sarcastic. Harsh is inherently rude, and sarcasm doesn't translate well to non-Anglo cultures.

That would be pretty rude to ask a man or a woman. The correct reply is "If I wanted you to know, I would have told you by now."

About as nice as a woman asking how many inches a guy is packing. And then chuckling at the answer.
