I purchased the van about a month ago. It is a 2008 dodge caravan. It only has about 250 miles on it. I bought it brand new. I parked it and turned off the engine. I got out of the van and realized i should reverse a little more. I turned the key....and it sounded like the engine was going to start, but it didn't. The lights on the inside turn on. I am soooo confused. I didn't do anything weird or anything. I called road side assistance and they came and gave me a jump to see if it was the battery, but that didn't work.
I called the dealer sales guy and he didn't explain anything to me. He just told me to bring it in on Monday.
Can anyone one tell me what went wrong?

I checked and the van is on Park. I also disconnected the battery for a couple of minutes. After I connected the battery back, the car still didn't turn on.
That sucks :0(

If it just clicks but the lights don't dim when you turn the key to start it is almost surely worn out contacts in the starter solenoid which is both a known weakness with the NipponDenso offset gear reduction starters and a cheap and easy fix. Unfortunately even though a few worn pieces of copper are all that is wrong with it a shop or the dealer will probably change the whole starter which of course costs more.

Look at ALL the fuses under the hood, one marked ASD or the memory fuse could be blown or poorly connected. If the car is running you can pull the memory fuse and keep driving, but once you shut down... Other than that dont worry its under warranty. They will fix it.

Even though under warranty, sound like the battery has really died (internal failure) especially if you just shut off the engine and won't restart. Another possibility could be the alternator may have failed to keep the battery charged, the battery light did not come on and you shut off the engine right before it died.

this is just an idea but maybe the fuel pump fuse should be checked also check that the battery cables are tight cause on newer cars if the battery is loose it will turn over but not maintain running hope i could help

well the first thing that went wrong is buying a Chrysler product, haha, all kidding aside its most likely some sort of computer fault that needs to be corrected you can try disconnecting the battery for a few minutes maybe 10 or so and then re connect the battery and try to start it.

Maybe its parked in reverse. You need to put in park again. I did that one time before. Check the transmission it may still be in reverse or drive

Regardless of what is wrong at this point, the dealer is obligated under the warranty to fix it. Don't guess, don't spend any more time on it , call your dealer.

I am willing to bet it is an electrical problem, most likely involving the EFI or the ignition system.
