how do you know that god actually communicated to moses, john, or any of the people who wrote bible? how do you know that these people didnt just have a really big and loud imagination, and tricked themselves into thinking god was talking to them? how do you know that these people were'nt just insane?

sorry if your offended by these questions, but if you cant ask yourselves these questions then im pretty sure your probably just believing because thats what youve been told is true. i refuse to believe something that tells me how to live without questioning it.

I see the first answerer is so stumped by the question that all he can do is quote from Bible and the rest just say because 'he said so', 'you wouldn't understand' etc etc. How reassuringly predictable.

The truth is that they don't know, they can't know, they just believe it is the God-inspired word because they want to and even then they just pick the bits they like and disregard the rest.

Well if you would take time to read the Bible you would find that the Old testament is mostly 1) History and 2) the law. There have been conformations of the history both in writings of the same period and in archaeological findings. As for the law - it worked for hundreds of years and in some cases still holds true.

The New Testament is the Gospels written by at least four different authors. There are some slight differences in the telling of the story of Jesus Christ and his ministry, but they all agree on the basic events and His message. Again there are other written records of Jesus including the Koran.

You are like a doubting Thomas. You want to see the proof. But Jesus said, 'Blessedis he who hasn't seen but believes.' The Word of God is confirmed with signs and wonders because Jesus is actually working with us. Look at the great things God did when Moses obeyed Him and went to talk with Pharoah. Miracles also followed Peter and Paul and the disciples. There are gifts of the Holy Spirit and there is fruit of the Spirit. In Acts chapter 2 the bibles explains why people were drawn to the true christian faith. I will let you do your homework to test your faith.

Well if you look at most disciplines there is a body of knowledge made up of thousands of texts. The bible is only one book. Religion is not wrong it just needs to be viewed as another way of understanding the world. It's a bit like astrology I think. Not technically true but a lot of people believe in it. Organised religions also do a lot of good work as well. In Australia the Uniting Church is the biggest provider of human services. Just let them believe in their gods and devils and assorted boogey men.

"i refuse to believe something that tells me how to live without questioning it"?
If you really believe this, shouldn't you be questioning your NOT beliveing? Do you really follow an idea that there isn't a God without questioning it? Becuase if you did question how you're living right now, you might realize that they weren't all insane and that God is real. Or are you just one of those huge hippocrites that goes on here and makes fun of others because they don't have proof about religion? Think about it.

Ever hear the word FAITH ? The telephone is not in the bible--no one believes it to be an instrument of the devil. We are driving in cars and flying in planes--not in the bible; the fact that you can get on a computer and ask this question--computers are not in the bible--you just have to have faith that when you turn on a switch, the darkness is overcome by the light. Are you an agnostic, or just an outright aethiest ? Those of us who believe in the Almighty still pray for you that don't.

Faith is a gift; either have been given this gift or not given it. However, if you read the bible, and read it over and over again, you will understand the concepts, and believe that it could only have been written by a Prophet or Apostle of God. The Bible offers us a way to live peaceful and joyous life.

John 1:1-3
In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God, and the Word was God, the same was in the beginning with God
All things were made by Him and without Him was not anything made that was made

I don't...but I think those who do think that thinks it because it says so in the book they preach about...I mean, I read the Silmarillion (kinda like a BIG prequel to the Lord of the Rings) and it said that all that stuff happened, and even passed it off as it actually happened, but does that make it real? Unfortunately no. So why so with the Bible? A self-referencing book does not do anything for "evidence" for anything...

excuse my poor english... ;)

i believe that for all of those who are believers, it really might be the word of god.

now, just make a test. just tell a story to 2 kids, in the same time
and then, take the kids one by one, and ask then to relate you the story...
and you'd see that you would not totally hear the very same story..

people do not see feel and hear the same way... they remember and focalise according to their values, but also according to their favorite way of receiving information. (these are the basis of nlp)

that's why i believe the important, when talking about any religious book, would be to understand the values, the overal ideas, acknowledging the historical - economical situation...
and realise that they should not necessary apply nowadays
