on October 7

The feast was introduced little by little, with the threatening Turkish invasion of Europe, to extend to the Universal Church .

October 7, 1571 was the date of the Battle of Lepanto, when the Turks were pushed back from invading Cyprus. At this time, Pope Pius V asked all people to pray the rosary, as a ¨powerful weapon against all evil¨.

The Turkish armies later reached as far as Vienna, to hold a siege on the city, untill they were retreated to Hungary and later from Serbia in the end of the 1800´s. Hungarian church bells mark the retreat each day at 12.00.
