"Choke" collars are metal chain collars, that when fitted and used correctly, give a correction during training to alert the dog that it is not in correct position. A simple, quick "snap and release" is used. "Choking" the dog, or allowing the dog to pull the collar until it is tight, is not correct use. It will not work to keep a dog from pulling on a leash--dogs always pull into pressure, thus a choke chain will make them pull even harder even if it is uncomfortable for them to do so. Chain collars are training tools only, and should not be worn at any other time, and not used in inexperienced hands. A Gentle Leader or Halti are much more humane training aids to use if you have a dog that pulls on the leash. Why do dogs pull on leashes? Because it works for them! When they pull, we move. If at first your dog begins to pull on the leash, simply reversing direction and a calm "heel" command will quickly teach the dog that pulling will get him nowhere. :)

The metal collar you described is a choke collar, but there are metal ones that arent. Choke collars dont actually stop their breathing, its actually mostly the noise the collar makes when pulled. Theyre not harmful to the dog, even though some people think they are. They are used for training and to keep your dog from pulling. To put it on, you bend the chain into a 'u' and stick the bottom into one of the holes and pull. Then slip it over their head.

the question was already i answered so im not gonna type a whole explanation lol but um i dont suggest using a choke collar, u can buy a cheap nylon leash that you make a slip knot out of giving u a collar and a leash from just a leash that goes around the neck that makes it one size fits all - u can do a quick jerk that will have the same affect as a choke collar

A choke collar is a special one that is used for training, as a short sharp jerk is used to correct the dog. I think there are other ways to train,I never used one on my dog. Chain metal collars are just that...collars. Ask for help at your pet store.

Choke Collars are used to tighten up, and "pinch" the dog, when he tries to pull away from the leash. They're used for training, althought it's crucial that you use them only AFTER your dog's previously been introduced to the other leashes;

If used properly, it is a good training tool for dogs that are too big and strong to handle otherwise. However, many people don't know how to use them properly and often hurt dogs badly and have even killed them by choking them too much.
