We have a leader who will sew on patches at $1 apiece, donation to the troop. I've heard of older Girl Scouts doing it to earn money for trips.
My 6th grade Junior is now sewing on some of her patches, too.
I've had too many patches fall off after ironing on to trust that. And yes, I follow the instructions carefully.
When I sew the badges and patches on, I run the thread through the threads they finish off the patches with - the colored ring around the edge. Then I don't have to poke through the thick patch itself. With good thread, these will stay on for years.
Personally, I keep a sewing basket by the couch, and if I sit down and watch TV, I mend or sew on patches. Gives my mind something to do when the TV is on.

Sewing is the best option...especially if you have a friend who is a very talented seamstress. If they're sewn on you can make modifications later should you want to move the patches around. However, another option (which is more permanent) is the good old Girl Scout hot glue gun. A lot of moms use those for crafts. If you don't have one, there's bound to be someone in your daughter's troop who does. Check with the leader. Fusible adhesives such as heat seal backing and Stitch Witchery don't work well because they require a press to control time, temperature, and pressure precisely. I used to use them just to hold the patch in place to prevent puckering while I ran them under the machine. Good luck.

Hello Jackie:
If you don't have access to BadgeMagic, you can get heat bond sheets from your local yard-goods store such as Joanne Fabrics, Hobby Lobby or the -Mart store. It is a sheet of heat-melt plastic that you can cut to size, and iron on the patch.
Best method by far is sewing.

I don't know if the Girl Scouts have anything similar, but at a Boy Scout shop you can buy something that sticks to the patch and to the uniform.

get patch magic. I don't know about the girl scout website but you can get it on the boyscout site or in fabric stores. In the store just tell them you need an adhesive to attach patches and they can help you out.

Hooray for badge magic!
I sew the big patches - the ones that show major milestones & that stay on his shirt over the years. But, the little ones, the ones they get two or three of every month, these get put on my cub scout's 'brag' banner with badge magic!

Alot of the badges now if you look on the back have kind of a plastic coating, these badges can be ironed on. The ones without have to be sewn on, or fabric glued.
