The PS3 overheats, no doubt about it. Its just that if the system is not able to release heat easily, then it will overheat or at least get warmer. However if it is in an area that has a good deal of space then the system is able to stay on longer. There is not possible way to determine the exact time but, this will allow you to make some kind of estimate.

I have the same version. Mine stands in good ventilated place horizontally. I was running "Folding@home" for more, than 8 hours without any problem (knock on wood). There were some reports (very rare) on overheating in PS3 in internet, but there was no such dramatic results as "Red ring of death" in 360. Instead, when overheating occurs, PS3 turns off automatically. When it cools off - turn it on and just use it.

Not sure where the guy above gets his info...We have had our ps3 since Dec... We have had 17 hour gaming marathons, we have been folding at home since March and our system since march has never been shut off. It is either folding at home or playing games or movies. it has never over heated,,,, Keep the back and sides clear of walls and things that will cause the heat to back up into the system...Do not get theintercooler and keep it out of the entertainment center..

I have to agree, my PS3 has been left on for days (sometimes even deliberately!) and hasn't overheated once.
Occasionally the fan will step up a gear for a few minutes, but that's all. It's just a fantastic bit of hardware.

i totally agree with RnD.... i leave my ps3 always open rarely closed and it never overheated.. u just have to put it in an ope space so it would get enough air to breath or otherwise just buy a cooler fan and keep it under ur ps3 and ull be living it..
