A choke collar (attached to a leash that you would be holding), is used to pull a dog back if, say, he lunges toward another dog while you are walking him in the park. These types of collars should only really be used if you have a potentially volatile type of dog such as an Akita or a pitbull. When you say 'metal collar' do you mean one with spikes? Or do you mean a metal chain type of collar?

I worked at Petco as a teenager and a vets office -- I can tell you from firsthand accounts, that I would not recommend using either of those as they often end up causing neck irritation and discomfort for the dog. How about using a nice flexi leash instead? It's comfortable for the dog, and a nice easy and sturdy grip for the person walking the dog, plus it's real inexpensive!

First:
Choke collars are a training tool, dogs are not to be tied out with them, only for training. They're designed to slide over the animals head and you pull on the end to make it tight (choke). Only "choking" is exactly what you're not to do. The training method is to give a sharp tug upward while the chain rests just behind the dogs ears to give them more of an auditroy jolt than a choking on the neck. So, a quick zip and release.

Now, if you have a long haired dog, this is likely not going to be very effective. They also make the pinch collars, these are another (even better in my opinon) training tool, very effective on long haired and or stubborn dogs. You'll see these collars, they have in facing wire prongs that will penitrate dence fur. These are not to be used to dig into the neck, the chain loop at the top should come together causing the wires to pinch skin rather than dig.

There is definately skill invovled with using either one, become familiar before hurting your put. Ask someone at the pet store or get a good book before applying techniques if you're unsure.

the metal collars like you are describing are choke collars. To use it you pull the chain through one of the circles and it makes a collar.

Alot of people say that they are cruel, but it depends on how it is used really. Personally I have a collar for my dog that is fabric and has a small section that tightens to keep her from backing out of it. It catches behind her jaw if she pulls backwards.

The important thing is to use the best collar for your dog. If you have a little bitty dog you can use a fabric collar, if you have a large pulling dog, you would want a choker or a "gentle leader" for walks. Ask the staff at the pet store. They should be able to give you recommendations for your dog.

The metal collar you described is a choke collar, but there are metal ones that arent. Choke collars dont actually stop their breathing, its actually mostly the noise the collar makes when pulled. Theyre not harmful to the dog, even though some people think they are. They are used for training and to keep your dog from pulling. To put it on, you bend the chain into a 'u' and stick the bottom into one of the holes and pull. Then slip it over their head.

Pull a loop of it back through one of the closed ends then slip the loop just formed over the dog's head. The lead attaches to the other closed end.

A choke collar is made to be used ONLY for training. Any other use should be treated as a case of animal cruelty. If you let a dog with a choke collar run loose, you are subjecting it to a very real threat of death by strangulation.

Get some help. These are TRAINING collars and should NEVER be left on the dog when you are not training. they are called CHOKE collars because they can choke the dog. Many dogs die each year when they are left unattended and strangle themselves to death.

When you get it in the "circle" have it form a "P" in front of you and while standing in front of the dog, place the "P" over it's head. If you put it on the WRONG way, it does not release.

Even the lowly people at PetSmart can show you how to use one.

Don't use them on dogs that are heavy pullers. You can cause damage to the trachea.

Choke collars are for training your dog to physically listen to you. Such as ... don't run from my side when taking a walk...or not to jump on someone as they walk in the house, etc...

What it actually DOES is it pinches the neck of the dog to cause a quick disaggreable reaction, therefore, training the dog to stop the action.

The closed circle is where you pull the chain through.

it is used to trian the dog to walk next to you without pulling take the collar and silde the chain part through one end with the metek ring this will make a loop put that one the dogs neck and take her/him for a walk, gently pull back on the leash if the dog pulls and say heal. don't let the dog walk ahead of you it should be by your side have fun good luck
