Yes it is safe, Service packs are just upgrades and small fixes for the glitches that come up after releasing the Software, which is required by the US laws, in other words, Software and computer companies by law have to back up their software for a period no less than 10 years, even if they come up with another versions of it, such as windows, that is why Microsoft and Windows still offering these Service Packs, however, 10 years mark hit, there will be no more service packs, it will be whichever on the market and that was it, for an example, lets say they stopped at SP 5, and the 10 years mark hit, and someone wanted to stay with XP, if they had to reformat their system, that is what they will get, these 5 Service packs only, so Microsoft will not release SP 6 or 7 etc. I hope this helps, and if you do not mind me asking you, why are you still Using XP? Vista is a very Smart Operating System and way better than XP. Best of Luck Sam
